Restaurants should pay their staff a living wage.

I am all for the Swiss system of no tipping and wish that we could have that here. The only good tipping system is this one:

I generally tip a little over 10%, more if service is good and higher percentages on smaller bills. I do reduce tips when waiters are really kak though.

The Swiss, like the French, usually include the tip in the bill as a service charge.

10% and then I round up.

Annoying when they include the tip in the bill and they don't point it out and the waiter then gets an extra big tip (happened at the Bosvelder in Centurion).

i generally tip 10-20 % in the hospitality industry.

good service or trying their utmost to provide a good service warrants a greater tip.

people that just do the minimum get close to 10%.

not getting tips, or sharing tips as some communal effort, gives little to no motivation to go the extra mile. meaning poorer experience for the clientele, less return business for the employer and in turn less tips for the employee.

as a waiter or a bartender you can really work your ass off and make good money every day. at one stage i could pocket around R2k a night earning my own tips. i cant really talk for the rest of the hospitality industry, but a busboy or a chauffeur could also make decent tips from what friends have told me.

I start at 10%. If the service is below par I start deducting. Final amount I calculate on the total before VAT.

Around 10%, but I hate tipping, especially in SA, because there is mostly a sense of entitlement from service staff. Most do not even acknowledge the tip and few even say thank you. So much so that even a moderate amount of "good attitude" from the staff feels extraordinary.

Restaurants should just charge enough to pay enough and say no tips necessary.

10-15% with a minimum amount for smaller bills - it totally depends on the service and amount
