Have been tinkering with the idea of getting a desktop with a nice 22'' LCD for Ubuntu, but a friend asked me why dont I use my PS3......

I've got a wireless keyboard and mouse, so shouldn't have a problem there. Just need a HDMI to DVI cable, which I'm sure will be available in a few shops.

Anyone tried it? Wonder what the performance will be like.....

RAM is a serious problem on the PS3 but it does work although you have no 3D acceleration.

Damn, was hoping I could turn my PS3 into a potent desktop + home entertainment system. :(

Ok, then I will have to purchase a new desktop.

Why don't you just try it, it might be enough for your needs?

Yea game using the console and then do interwebz/music/email from linux.

Hopefully I will get a chance this weekend....didn't get a chance to install Ubuntu last weekend. Should be interesting to see how it runs on the PS3. ;)

Question: is there an up to date PowerPC version of Ubuntu floating around? AFAIK, in order to install on a PS3, your distro must be compiled for PowerPC, and I know Ubuntu officially dropped support for PowerPC a few releases ago.

Distros that I have heard of that work are Yellow Dog and Fedora.

You need the alternate iso.
