MWEB OPS

I remember now it was said that mweb news server draws from a international news server, this would explain the secondary retention. What is this news server and what is the retention it provides to MWEB? This would give me the real answer to my question.

Hi rambo919

Giganews ISP feed only provide articles up to 120 days old. We cache articles that the users download for 8 days.

I trust this is the information you require.

This does not explain how im able to download older articles, your system is extremely confusing when thinking in definite terms. So if after 200d my download stops we have a third retention....holy cow dude

I think what rambo is trying to ask Mweb, is whom do your servers query when the content is not cached and what is the retention of the servers you query.

Rambo, while it may be confusing, I think it works really well. Caching for recent content, established by user demand, retention for 8 days to save drive space on local servers, it's a great concept. Ah mweb ops, the 8 day retention is that from when last requested or from date of news file?

What confuses me is why don't Mweb put down a massive news server (maybe even charge for it) with a huge retention time. Surely from seeing their international nntp traffic go through the roof its economically viable do to this and then it would keep all the traffic local. We would be able to get faster speeds during the day then.

@gregmcc

Local peering remember, MWEB doesnt have real local traffic anymore

Mweb working wonders atm, telkom bull**** sorted out and all PC's on the network configured to work properly.

Disgusting still can't stream anything this evening!

try the openweb gold accounts. cheaper than the unshaped. but better value than the normal mweb uncapped (which i have tried).

i've had some issues last two months. but before that it was spectacular and many still have the same service.

edit - i couldn't care less what ISP you ultimately move to. I have been looking at alternative solutions while I had a problem which seems to be solved now. But it made me realise I should always be aware of what the top players are doing.

im thinking it could be telkom problem lino is having, you all ready sed your line only sync at 3.2mb, which means your pretty far away from the exchange and will have bad quality line etc.

Hi Linoman

Please have Telkom investigate for congestion on your line as I have checked on our side and everything looks fine. I can see that your line is syncing at 3Mbps and you shouldn't be having this much lag on your line. Find out from Telkom as well, why they have synced you on 3Mbps.

Once you receive feedback from Telkom, please inform us thereof.

Thanks for the response, do I just phone them and ask them to check for congestion and perhaps reset the port?

Hi Linoman,

Yes, call Telkom and ask them to check for congestion on your line. They will take it from there, do necessary checks and you can ask them to reset your port as well.
