Which means Mweb dont filter merely by protocol, they filter by content type. Kids, this is why we need net neutrality. What if the Mweb honchos decide you shouldnt be allowed to visit the page's of competitor's sites? Those are also accessed via HTTP, just like fileserve etc.

this should be an official MWEB thread or better yet MWEB need one on there site, reason being
MWEB Support Techi calls me last night as I had problems with surfing to pages and playing online with PS3 since last week 16 August 2011

He said and I vaguely quote: "We are unaware of any problems on our network, and as this has been happening on your account since last week we should of gotten more calls about it if it was network related"
Me: "well i was unable to play online and surf properly for the whole of last week and the weekend it worked perfectly. Also There is a forum on mybroadband.co.za that indicates that there have been members nationwide having problems for the past month, and it appears you guys have implemented something"
GUY: "again we should of had more reports" ....... bla bla bla bla

They are lying continuously a buddy of mine that was called in to see their network structure etc.. and he says they dont know what the hell is goin on there and everything is a mess..
Also why is they dont have a customer feedback page so that everyone else can see whether there is good or bad feedback about the company..

so what now??? its weekend my line will be up and running perfectly, come monday we back to where we started!?

@MwebGuy please provide feedback, as this is a very important one you should answer

Well, I have purchased Dues Ex on steam, it has been pre-downloaded but I'm pretty sure it requires steam online to play. Everything was running perfectly happy this morning whereas I've had connectivity issues from early afternoon to 11pm at night.

If I get home and can't play what I purchased with a service that I'm paying for, it's not the game thats going to be blamed, I will cancel the account and advise the CPA of the notice period being unfair due to lack of service during said notice period. Either way you will lose a customer.

I've had enough of this nonsense this week.

Fully agree as we are made aware of all Shaping services etc at the time of signup and agree to those terms
"Priority given to email and surfing during business hours" which are offical in SA as being mon-fri 8am-5pm
"Shaping will be on P2P clients during office hours and thereafter full linespeed will be accessible" understood however PS3 and other console online-gaming are not P2P clients as it states "ONLINE-GAMING"

As explained before it is only MWEB, as I had running now the following all on the same line Afrihost, Telkom, Axxess , Webafrica (I have very genrous friends who share connections :D ) they all work perfectly

And why must I call in where is the online support desk??? and Helpdesk system ???

Called Mweb support last night and they explained that because of the seacom link being down couple of weeks back, they running low on bandwith (seems like they being rationed by seacom). They waiting on bandwith allocation from Seacom which could happen in the next week or so.They is why they shaping more heavily than normal. Now I don't know how true this is but a rep told me this when i called technical support.

Based on the small sample test downloads from filesonic today the above does seem to make sense

Filesonic is dead for me. Even struggle downloading after 12AM. Get speeds of 20kB/s.
No real point of uncapped it we cannot download anything.

I uploaded a 1.6 Mb picture to filesonic this morning before 8 and downloaded it twice.

Now at 09:00 I am unable to download it from filesonic, but downloaded ±300Mb without problem from another hosting service. To my simple mind this means that filesonic is blocked and not shaped.

Here is the link
http://www.filesonic.com/file/1763818524

Can everybody test this and see if you can download the picture then complete this table below

Nick / Time / Area / Data this month / Success
fgdt / 09:00 / Pretoria / 30Gb / No
TmanSA / 09:25 / Centurion / ? / No

Tried downloading - Time 13.05pm
Edgemead , C.T.
Regular download stuck on :
19 minutes remaining - 48.8 kB of 1.7 MB (1.7 kB/sec)
Still hanging as i post this.

Hi Everyone

I'm going to repost this response which I gave to schumi yesterday as it appears many of you did not read it:

I believe that the p2p experience has dipped a bit in the last few weeks. Honestly this is too be expected from time, but the good news is that we do have a fairly significant upgrade to our network planned. The international bandwidth is actually already in place but our additional IPC requirements are running a little behind schedule. Telkom are pulling out all the stops to get this in place and we should see the upgrades coming through by the end of next week, possibly sooner.

In light of this I would ask that those of you who are not happy with the p2p experience please bear with us while we wait for this work to be completed. As always I can't guarantee you anything when it comes to p2p and speeds, but you should see an improvement once the upgrades have been completed.

On the gaming front I can give you the following feedback:

We did have an influx of Steam authentication complaints yesterday, but were unable to determine the root cause. We have also obtained additional information from Valve about the authentication process and servers and are taking additional steps to assure this traffic which should be in place soon.

In terms of Steam downloads I have been informed that a problem was detected on the JHB Steam cache (faulty network card), that was causing some speed problems downloading from that server, but this has now been resolved.

From a network point of view gaming traffic is currently not under pressure and if you are experiencing problems in this area then I would ask you to please help, us help you by going through the proper troubleshooting process and giving us all the data we need.

Kind Regards
Will

What about non p2p downloads from the afore mentioned sites? fileserve is not P2P. It does not use the P2P protocol. Why is it blocked during peak hours?

EDIT:

Hi Everyone

I'm going to repost this response which I gave to schumi yesterday as it appears many of you did not read it:

Oh and thanks for being condescending. So glad I cancelled!

@Will, just as a note, I have'nt really had any issues with the jhb steam server while downloading, managed to preload Deus Ex Sunday night to Monday morning, authentication is more my issue. And the EA connect story for BFBC2.

@Will

I did read your reply but did not find it sufficient to explain the problems I'm experiencing.

1) You mention a dip in p2p speeds. I assume you include downloading from file hosting sites in this statement even though it uses a different protocol. It surely must be because I am Afrikaans speaking that I misunderstood your use of the word dip. In Afrikaans that would mean 'n slight slowdown. However my experience and that of other people on this forum have been that p2p (and file hosting) has dipped, drowned and is now dead. I think we should rename these services to ZOMBIE services seeing that they miraculously return to life at around 12 pm and die again as the sun come up.

2) You mention that a network upgrade is in place and some parts running behind schedule. I will take this as an admission that MWEB has some kind of network problem then, although I would have liked - as a paying customer - to be fully informed of exactly what the problem is. I still find it strange that network capacity problems can suddenly appear in one day (16 August) - leading to worse experience on shaped protocols - to the point of certain services being inaccessable.

3) I have read MWEB's acceptable use policy and realise that you are fully covered. My intension in raising issues was not too force you to restore service levels to what it was before 16 August (although that would be nice) but just to get an honest answer from MWEB. If you are implementing more stringent shaping policies (as I would think is obvious to most readers of this thread) JUST INFORM ME or provide me with an intelligent alternative answer to my experience on your network so that I could make an informed decision on my spending of R899 per month for internet access.

I will not raise this issue anymore as an answer is obviously not forthcoming. I wait in anticipation for the network upgrade to be completed (Where on MWEB's website will I be able to see progress on this?) and hopefully I will then be able to go back to enjoying the internet.

I agree with @fgdt 's response lack of communication will lose the company many clients as I have the following provided FROM MWEB
Internet (on occassion in this case) and EMAIL
So how hard is it to send a mass email to all clients to their respective email addresses stating just the following and by all means use this as a template
and have it sent at least a week in advance cos hell there is planning which takes place when making upgrades

"
Kindly Note we will be performing (Activity) on (dd Month Year) at (time)

Any changes to the estimation of the above will be communicated

We do apologise for the inconvenience
