Why dont they throttle based on individual use instead of application/protocol/torrent?
I mean imagine if I'm a new customer and have not downloaded a single MB from filesonic or whatever its called. Should I be penalized because other people download 100s of GBs per month? Doesnt make sense to me.
Not that I even use filesonic or fileshare or whatever, I just dont think its a smart way to manage traffic. That would mean if the guy who pulls 200GB in a month wants to use something that is considered high priority, he gets the same speeds as everyone else.
The problem, if I'm understanding Mweb at the moment, is that they have lost capacity on their major trunk which is through Seacom. This means they are allowing port 80 traffic but are trying to limit everything else until they get the capacity back, everything else being torrents. fileshare etc. My problem is that my gaming traffic is being lumped in as well which is a problem for me, if any downloads take longer, don't really care.
As to restricting on a usage bassis, that goes against the whole policy of a shaped managed network. Shaping means that a pool is available for use by the clients, if the clients chose to use the availability of the pool at the time to pull large amounts, thats
fair because it was available. You cannot penalise them at a later stage when the pool is smaller as all cleints had equal oppurtunity and access. As long as the downloads are not port 80 or ssl to avoid the shaper, it doesn't matter.
Not that I'm happy about my gaming traffic btw, just saying.
