Never had a bike with the back part like that , i would cut the thing off.
I have had 18 bikes all makes .
Heel shifters are a godsend if you a foot related medical issues and don't want to switch to an automatic gearbox. It allowed me to keep riding my bike a few years back.

No it's an algorithm of distance plus time.Yesterday I discovered that my bike has self-cancelling indicators. Think it works off the lean-angle sensor. Indicate, lean over, and when leaning back it switches off.
Mostly pointless but also cool.
