This was my thought process to a large degree as well. I was thinking that I don't quite want a bike where I break out in sweat everytime I have to ride it. Just purely cause the guy at the store mentioned that I might be better suited to a Z800 as I am tall, and thought maybe I'm being a pansy :)

Height and weight are irrelevant once you hit proper bikes.

What car do you drive?

Ford EcoSport, TDCi, quite a bit past the whole want to go a light speed phase of my life.

The Z800/900 is basically a superbike motor put into a naked frame...which makes it worse in many ways as you sit upright and have no aerodynamics on your side. (0-100 in <3 seconds and I'm going to guess 120km/h in 1st gear...which is a few millimetres of throttle if you get it wrong).

They might be based on superbike engines but they are not tuned the same at all. The naked versions are usually tuned for more torque than power, have a smoother throttle response and lower rev limit.

But I do agree that starting from nothing on a powerful bike is a bad idea. Unless it has all the electronic aides your going to get into trouble fast. From scratch I think a scooter is best. Much easier to balance with legs and you can get used to driving with you arms without having to worry about foot brakes and gears.
From there move onto a small bike, or borrow one. Get used to footpegs etc.

Then go fast

No I wanted to give you some perspective.

The Z800 does about 30kw more and weights a 10th of your car.

The Z650 is one par power wise while still weighing much less.

Then Z650 it will be :) Think I've finally settled on a bike that ticks all the boxes. I've bounced between the smaller bikes first, from a Duke 390 to a 310R to a Duke 690, to a NC750X to a 310GS to a F700 to a F800 to a Z300 to a Versys 650, to a DL650 to a SV650 back to a 390 back to a 310GS and then stumbled upon the Z650.

Various reasons for bouncing around and found something I didn't like on all the above mentioned bikes. Until the Z650 :) woohoo! Cannot wait!

I used to be obsessive compulsive with turning off my indicators. When I got my KTM 1050 I made sure they enabled the auto cancel. This forced me to become obsessive compulsive turning my indicators on as the bike was so damn eager to turn them off.

I was calling scooters vaginas. You don't attract vaginas with other vaginas.
 
Reminds of the one day I went to BMW for a service on my bike and the had one of their high CC scooters as a loan bike. I picked the S1000RR that day and their were no takers on the scooter.
