Any ideas of the waiting time to do learners license in Randburg nowadays? Going to get an appointment on Saturday, was just wondering what I should be preparing myself for.
Getting real now
BMW course is booked or the 10th. Will then probably go buy gear and all that the weekend after that. Went and had a look at the Z650 yesterday - looks flippen amazing, so I'll probably end up on one of those.
Guy mentioned that currently the Z800 is going for less, and cause I'm tall that might be a better option - can't find nearly as much on the Z800 in terms of reviews for beginner friendliness, what's the consensus here though?
This is probably an unpopular opinion but I'm not a believer in putting an Inline 4 cylinder in the hands of a beginner.
The Z800/900 is basically a superbike motor put into a naked frame...which makes it worse in many ways as you sit upright and have no aerodynamics on your side. (0-100 in <3 seconds and I'm going to guess 120km/h in 1st gear...which is a few millimetres of throttle if you get it wrong).
It's the equivalent of learning to ride on a Ferrari Enzo (this isn't a joke but a reality).
It's also a much heavier and much taller bike seat height wise which will make a beginner very jittery.
The Z650 on the other hand will give you virtually the same torque (possibly even more at low revs) while limiting the power from insane to reasonable while still outrunning most cars easily.
It will be a better bike to learn on and become a better rider. It will also be much lighter on fuel, tyres and chains so cheaper to run.
More comfortable for having an actual seat instead of a blank and I seem to recall there are some luggage options available too.
Ride it for 2-3 years and then when you ride with pure muscle memory and really know your stuff and crashed a few times you upgrade to something you really want and are able to test ride to the full instead of just buying off the floor hoping for the best like you would now.
And take the one with ABS (if they aren't all standard by now).
Sure it's not impossible to learn on the Z800, but odds are you'll never ride it to 100% and the 650 will make a better rider of you in the longer term.

The Z650 was called the ER6-N (Naked) or ER6-F (Faired) in previous years which is why you'll struggle to find second hand options.
I have ridden both and the Z650/ER6 is the better commuter.
