Stay away from 125cc.Not worth it. Unless it is a two stroke. I'll still pass a 125cc whether 2 or 4 stroke in favour of anything 4stroke bigger than 250cc

Look at 250cc and higher.
I agree. The 125cc might feel a bit weak, unless you give it the beans most if the time. Look at a 250cc as a start and work up.

Very good advice guys except for one small detail - he is only allowed up to 125cc and anything bigger will require a learners first.

It also depends on your goals. If performance or long distance commuting is your reason for biking then sure, don't bother with the 125s, but if your goal is the odd commute or just plain fun/fscking around then they are great (well some of them).

I spent an hour and a half today just messing about the northern suburbs on mine today. There's no way a bigger bike (bigger than the msx's 3/4 frame) would've been more fun. Not everything is about being ahead of the pack on the highway all the time :rolleyes:
 
you can get a decent late model preowned harley (esp in the Cape) for around R100k with tons of extras. I would suggest a minimum of 1200cc. the bike is very heavy you will find the should you ever decide to pillion, two people will make the ride a bit sluggish.
Going for the 883 for now as I like the myriad of ways to customise it. I'll probably get another bigger bike in a year or so.

In retrospect, now that you mention it... not in gear, slipped backwards and tumbled over.
I was specifically warned about that when I did my license class. Now I live by it, even when I park my bike in the garage at night, it's in gear. I have a tendency that if I park on an incline, before I get off, I let the bike roll either forward or backwards until the transmission locks against the engine, and then only put the stand down.

I really hope the damage is not bad, or costly

Weird rolling backwards it should stay on the stand.

Usually it goes forwards.

But yeah general rule is to park with the incline (front higher than rear) and in gear.

Always in gear even on a flat surface.

Why there is a safety so you can't start it in first as they'll even tell you in the manual to park in 1st.

But don't feel too bad. We've all done something similar, even while being there. At least yours was in your absence.

No change someone else bumped it maybe?

(Also hoping this isn't completely the wrong place for such a question)

Something a bit like this (image from ebay), except it doesn't need to be new.

Carb is off a '80/'81 Suzuki TS250. Currently has a bit of wire with a washer that you wrap around the exhaust, which, obviously is not a great setup and would really like something a bit more sensible.

Cape Town/ Stellenbosch area if possible, (Online ordering even more so, but I suspect I would have already found this.)

Look at 250cc and higher.

Go for anything that offers torque, preferably 250CC and up. the Honda CBR250R is a great idea. Why not go for a full license and go for a Dualie or something that offers ample highway performance, which means you're never looking for more power. You never string a bike out on a highway, it actually very uncomfortable.

finally got word back on my bike.
crank and bearings need to be replaced.
they cant find a replacement crank for my bike, so I have to go to Yamaha directly.

crank is going to be like R7K and the bearings are like R100 each.
and they are on back order, so it will take 2 to 3 weeks to get IF they have the parts in Japan.
and I need to pay the full price before the stock is ordered.

so anyone know a different place I can look other than going to Yamaha directly?
 
PM the make and model and year and your location.

I might be able to find a crank for you and courier to you depending on location.

I usually send up a compliment of bearings too.

PS. I am not dealer! Because of family relations and networking I have found a few good suppliers who might be able to assist if they have the parts in stock
 
Just had my first encounter with traffic cop and not having my my new number plate on yet, cop yielded for me so ended up behind me, I was waiting for the lights... nothing. Got to a stop, with him behind me still. Stopped and went, he turned and went in another direction.

No lights no nothing.
 
Are there any decent online bike gear stores I can use for research on prices, etc? (clothing, helmets, etc)
