I'm pretty sure my engine oil is supposed to get replaced at every service... I'm also pretty sure when it gets replaced they fill it to max... Why then is my oil at essentially the same level as before the service

The "max" is actually in the middle.

If it's over full the gearbox doesn't work properly.

But black is not good.

Next time use Cape Town...oil is one of the big reasons I was told to avoid Stellenbosch like the plague.

Not that they didn't change it but rather just chuck on whatever they feel like.

ok, so I had a prang, not too bad, on Tuesday. Nice bump to bruise my hand, shoulder and side against a car. So now I'm looking for another bike. What are the feelings on BMW650GS , I see there are 2 or 3 on Gumtree/autotrader , one has 75000kms on for R48k(mid 2000s model. Another Gs unknown mileage(2001) model for R33k. Should one risk that high mileage? Negotiate the daylights out of it, or are these too old?

Your bike has a slightly different window, the guide circle is much smaller whereas mine is basically the size of the entire window. And I don't share oil between engine and transmission.
But going to call them tomorrow, see what they say now that I've confirmed via the invoice they claim to have done oil and filter. And only done 130km since the service so no ways it should be black already.

Aaah never knew they split the gearbox and engine.

But like I said not the first time I've heard some shocking things.

Not old ...too many km and overpriced for high mileage
I recently bought a Versys 650 2007 under 30k km for r 40k but it had power commander and a set of newish BMW panniers value 20k + aftermarket pipe and Karoo 3 tyres and a custom engineered & built frame for the panniers to which I added front crash bars and fog lights unlike the 1200 I can pick up easily after crashing in sand
Look around look at olyx there's better deals to be had
great bikes why do u need a BM ?

Looked at others, Kawasaki KLR?, Suzuki DLR etc...too big for me. they're wide, not suited for commuting. And I'm a short guy and heard that GS is well suited when your shorter.

Interesting.

Glad to know I'm not the only one and this would be the first to find another also riding.

People think I'm just sensitive or moan too easily but it really can take all the fun out of it.

What did you sell? What was the primary pain with the riding position ?

I know of one other rider, we should start a club!

But seriously, I agree with you, it can be a big downer when you just want to have some fun on your bike.

I had a Harley-Davidson Breakout, absolutely loved the bike, but when I was in a flare up condition, after I finished riding I was in a lot of joint pain, particularly in my right shoulder and hip.

I now have a Road King, and don't battle at all on it, the same for my GS, no discomfort, even on a long ride.

What bike are you riding that is causing you your discomfort?

I was riding a Triumph Street Triple that was a major problem.

Now on a BMW R1200RS and it's a million miles better.

I do plan to raise the bars anyway.

Just repaired a puncture for the first time. Found a nail in the tire. I assume I need to buy a new tire?

Just signed my life away... Daytona 675. I can't stand the traffic anymore
