No Data connection but full signal

When I used to use Cell C, I noticed that when my RSSI dropped below a certain level this issue would occur. I assumed it was a distance issue related to the "Near-Far-Effect". Maybe power run away type effect can also explain the crazy heat that emanates from the modem.
Something along this line:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near-far_problem

As previously mentioned, suddenly there are too many subscribers on each base station, the issue isn't really a lack of capacity, but that the base stations only really detect the users closet to the base station, or with highest SNRs.

Anyways that's what I always assumed the problem was, but maybe someone here has more knowledge than me.

I think this is exactly the issue here. I have an interesting find. I tethered my mobile to my PC and ran a ping... 0% throughput on HSPA+. But, make a phone call to any number (customer care for example) if the call connects 100% throughout at blistering speeds!
So, a work around which works for me (very irritating though) is to place a call to customer care and send the answering computer in a circle with options.
So far the only work around I have found.

Those are amazing finds you two! I'm going to test it out this evening. It sounds very plausible.

Hi,

Should you have any outstanding network reference numbers please send them through as we have requested senior management from the network team to pay special attention and prioritize this TT. In an event that you don't have a reference number please DM your contact number, cellc number and full physical address of the affected area.

Regards
Cellc|TM

Miracles Happen! Today is the very first day that I got throughput while on 3G in the middle of Centurion for the last two weeks.

First time ever I got a result when doing a speedtest! The rest of the time it could not even get a server.

Ping - 57 ms
Download - 4.05 Mbps
Upload - 1.86 Mbps

Either something is getting done or a miracle just happened. 4.05 is quite OK and it cannot get to this from zero if something was not done.

Let's hope it stays!!!!

Forgive me if I am slow, are you saying that if you make a call and browse the net at the same time and then your speed is fast?

Thank you CellC!
Now I can use it!:)

I called the Technical Support since i'm on my 3rd reference number. He seemed clueless as to the fault could be, but i'll quote what he had to say " Our Network team are trying their level best to sort out the problem"
Wow, 6 weeks & the Network team cant seem to find the fault.

Also having issues. I have heard they have changed from Nokia-Siemens monitoring their networks to doing it themselves. I also heard that they are having major issues with ZTE tower... I am having data issues daily with them and now they are installing an in building solution.

Eish, getting slower

Yesterday was the worst day with Cell C so far. My wife had 3 bars signal on her phone but it said emergency calls only. She works from home but must always be available. This time however, Cell C didn't work during the day and didn't work in the evening. Good signal but no throughput. Not for voice or data. My wife was in tears. She is going to stop her Cell C contract this weekend.

I am very disappointed in Cell C. Not only has their data and call performance been pathetic but their support has been non existent. Cell C will never see money from me again. I will dissuade all friends and family from using them and I know there's already hundreds of complaints at HelloPeter but I will go add mine.

Cell C are jerks. Their support basically consists of finding out what the problem is and then you never hear from them again. I invited them to come to my house to have a look. I invited them over for coffee. All to no avail. Cell C should have offered a refund by now or at least have shown up to investigate the problem! I would have been happy with that because it shows progress.

I was once a happy Cell C customer but things have gone downhill from there. What has happened with you Cell C? Your success has come to quickly and you do not have the infrastructure nor customer support to deal with it. You have let your customers down.

And it sucks. :(

no throughput in town on HSDPA.
i have throughput on GSM but it is very unreliable

Wouldnt it be nice if Cell C could at least inform us, the paying customers as to what necessary procedures are in place to resolve this problem. Surely, by communicating with us on a daily frequent basis would really give us a peace of mind, instead of us growing ever so increasingly anxious & restless.

Guess it's time to go back to vodacom... with my tail between my legs :o!

I went and signed a Vodacom contract yesterday. Will see if my sim is activated when I get back home from work.

Cell C let us down heavily. Will never make use of them again.

Cell C are dishonest !!!!

I am sick of these Cell C !
They took my money no issues, but i cant use the data ! it has been months!
every time i open a ref you at CELL C close the ref.
again ! today !

Go back on my nr and see hom many ref numbers you have closed stating its fixed!
Cell c guy on my broadband, no awnser from you.

Warning all people ! dont take contracts from Cell C!
They just ignore the problems

Using prepaid for 3 months to test the waters as my work contract is due for renewal. I'm sticking to the devil i know. Cheap data and calls and so is their coverage. I can't commit to such an unstable network. Drop calls, calls go to voice mail and all they offer is an apology. I use my work phone for standby and vodacom is the more reliable network.

There network has degraded in my area.
That said it is better in different areas. So it could be the tower in my area is severely congested.
I wonder if they look or receive stats from towers to see thru-put & identify problem areas.
MTN data has dropped in price & they've just been good so far, but when travelling especially remote areas i tend to use vodacom for data (against my will)
