Only able to access Cell C website (data services not enabled)

Check programs like netlimiter and AVG and disable them if you have them. I noticed, when my dongle used to work, that netlimiter interferes with the com port a bit. Also after you uninstall try deleting the files that are left (like user data folder and settings folder or something like that) check device manager under ports tab and make sure huawei modem isn't still there. Then reinstall.

I ran into some install problems when it wasn't picking up the card because the modem was still installed so I couldn't reinstall

Checked its got data loaded on it?
Drop firewall off to test?
Try another USB port?
Guess if it wasn't rica'd properly it wouldn't connect but it is.
Tryed a differant browser?(or check that "File " Work Offline" is not checked

Symptoms you have seem similar to when one has run out of credit/data - maybe see if they can reset the bundle for a try

i) Data is loaded on.
ii) Tried with no firewall.
iii) Tried all 3 usb ports.
iv) Rica'd
v) Tried all browsers, tried games...

try another stick.
remove the C from the stick.

i) The Cell C guys stick had the same problem.
ii) Sim was removed when calling technician.

Yip, I read that, I use windows security essentials and can't check to see if it is monitoring; my brother also uses security essentials and he has no problem.

#MSE doesn't have an icon over the left side taskbar where you can temporarily disable it?(sorry i've never used it)
#You don't have Vodacom Mobile Connect software installed on the PC ?

Short term fix might be to create a VM (VirtualMachine) from inside win7 s & try run it from there till you get it worked out?

Check your ping to the local Web sites, i.e CellC. Does it resolve DNS?

I don't have vodacom connect software, but i have sony ericsson software, I subsequently deleted all the dial ups for my phone, and it still doesn't connect. How do I create a virtual machine?

That's a really good one, what utter BS.

Can you connect to the internet at all on this laptop, i.e. with a different method?

Ja lol, he was saying it to me like you would tell the short kid he's not cut out for basketball... And yes, I'm connected right now through the works wifi... And it connects fine on my vodacom cellphone.

Check your ping to the local Web sites, i.e CellC. Does it resolve DNS?

How do I do this?

Thanks for the replies so far...

Yeah cancel the VM idea - Sharing internet from host to guest works but just tried sharing the other way around & it doesn't seem to work anyhow.

Guessing that's inter-VM jargon..

Any other solutions?

I've tried connecting through his wireless, and can't get that right, so he (my brother) has created a wifi hotspot using a program 'conectify me'. The only problem is, I think that the program processes everything first... ie: I click on a page, it says timed out, I click on it again and it pauses pauses then instantly loads. Instantly loads... Times out... Instantly loads... And I can only buy the TP-Link MR3420 router when the new stock comes in on the 6th of December... Sucks sucks sucks!!

To ping: Start -> Run then type: cmd <enter>
Then type ping www.blablabla <enter>
Have Microsoft cancelled command line processor in Win7?

ping cell c = 0% packet loss, 65ms ping.

ping mybroadband.co.za: ping request could not find host mybroadband.co.za. Please check the name and try again.

ping google.c.za:
0% packet loss, 324ms ping!

ping mybroadband.co.za (again):
64ms ping

ping google.co.za (again):
318ms ping.

ping news24.co.za:
101ms ping

but neither of my browsers can visit the sites...
CellC website is whoosh though..

Works on other (identical) laptop, so it is not provisioning problem - ping is working which confirms this. My guess, agressive power management settings. I can't advice Win7, but got to the device management select the USB hub your modem is attached to and uncheck the option "allow this device to conserve power" (or similar things).

There's nothing wrong with the data stick, it works in my brothers laptop which is identical to mine. The Cell C technician "confirmed with his supervisor and with the supplier that the stick is not compatible with the i5 processor" and he was stumped when I told him it worked on my brothers laptop which also sports the i5 processor.
Yea, he should be stumped all right ..preferably WITH one, across his forehead!. There is NO correlation between i5 and the E1820 in 'Windows-world' (as my MBP-toting friend calls it); CellC should send that oke to actual/re-education camp.

Is weird 2 computers the same ain't it

In Win7 - Start/Control panel/Power Options/
On the Power option that is active - click on - "Change Plan settings" then click on -" Change advanced power settings"
Scroll down till you see the "USB Settings" expand there till you see "USB selective suspend setting" & change it to disabled,Apply,Ok

Lookslike your usb host controllers are corrupt. Your problem is sofware related as your post states that your stick works.

I would consider a reinstall of the OS or a trial OS iontall.

I think this could be true Mach - I managed to get the same issues you are having by playing around with an overseas telco's dash last night.
The other dash would connect fine but no websites would load.
This could also be why the Cell C modem from the shop would do the same thing in your laptop.

With the modem out of the laptop uninstall Cell C dash, reboot, then put the stick back in & reinstall & see if its any differant.

I've done that like 3x...
It has gone from not going to any site to going to the cell c site, and being able to ping...

Maybe it's going through vodacom cold turkey and will have converted to cell c soon...

I'm experiencing the exact same problems, only for the last 2 days. Followed some of the advice on the thread (deleting VMClite software etc) but still no joy.

And pinging local sites now are a ridiculous 638 ms! (0% loss)

Compare this to an average of 50 ms when i joined.

Where's that Cell C rep when you need him. It's bizarre how it just happened seemingly overnight.
