Router Battery Backup

I got one of those energy meters from a friend and this was the values for the multiplug that had those 4 devices plugged in for 6 hours. As I have it, my need is very small.

Okay cool, what is a good price for the Ratel 860p and the 50W Solar Panel (is there a specific brand that I should look at)? I saw this morning in my emails that Loot had the GIZZU’s Mini 8800mAh DC|POE UPS for R840 (I have discount through Multiply with Loot, so I normally check them and then the other online retailers that ship to my town for a reasonable price).

Thank you all for the answers, I appreciate it.
any 50W solar panel will do.

50W might be overkill though as he's only using 12w. Batteries have 64W/32W capacity (860p/430s), so even 20W/10W should charge them in just over 4 hours from completely flat while running all the devices.

i see it says "up to":
RATEL 860P
Micro DC-DC UPS Lithium-ion Battery Bank (8x2200ma Li-Ion) 100~240VAC / 50~60Hz, MAX O/P PWR:60W, O/P: USB:5VDC @ 2.0A /10W, 9/12VDC @ 2.0A, PoE Interface:10A 15VDC@16W OR 24VDC@24W, Solar I/P:12~25VDC upto 50W, (252x146x45) 0.94kg

might aswell go 50W and be charged in an hour? what if it's cloudy? 50W will be like 15W.

What happens when you throw AC in the mix with the Ratels? Does it prioritise Solar over AC? Or is Solar only there to provide better runtime during AC Outage?
(Because even with a 50W panel, on a very cloudy day, it won't be charging a lot - nevermind also keeping your gear running 24/7.)

Another option would be to modify your UPS to add a second (or bigger) battery, but a DC would be simplest. If I were you I'd probably keep the 24V guy on the existing ups and pop the rest on a Ratel (or similar).
I like the Ratel 430S idea. I can decide if I want to charge it via Solar or normal and as I understand you guys, it would run the 2x5v and 1x12v adapters smoothly.

FYI, Sinetech only has the 50W Solar Panel in stock (that is, if I want to buy it now). Does the Ratel and the Panel come with the necessary wiring or do I need to buy extra?

It should come with one DC splitter cable, which you can use for the two 5V devices. You'll need another cable for the 12V device.

I'm not sure what cabling is required for the solar.

yeah not sure, i think the solar option is just to extend running time during power outage. obviously if its at night then you're screwed.

I guess the determining factor on panel size is budget. A 10w panel is R150, 20w is R400 and 50w is R800.

Honestly, I just had to get something that could get me through loadshedding (could get that UPS locally), it was a security issue for me when loadshedding started to happen in the evening and I didn't have any ways of communicating to my neighbors or farm watch. Also it was in December, most of the online shops takes 2-3 weeks to deliver in December (silly season) and I didn't know what else I could get locally.

I did ask on a Carbonite forum what other options I have (https://carbonite.co.za/index.php?threads/ups-questions.274871/page-2), but that system required me to sort of build my own system which I didn't really want to do (don't want to build something that could burn my thatch roof down when I'm a weekend away :D). I'll spend a few bucks more if it is a reputable brand and it is plug & play.
lol na ups won't be a fire hazard I have smaller UPS running 2 x 24Ah batteries charge time is a killer (a full day to charge on a 1amp charger) but it is quiet enough for a bedroom tv, and does what i need it to.
if you don't have anything yet i won't recommend buying a UPS to do this, then i would suggest getting a inverter and battery, but if you have a UPS already it's a fun thing to try.

I bought a 430M and disassembled it. I see the cells they use are 0817's so I'm adding another bank of them. I take back what I said; they're more than just a few off the shelf parts. Very good value for money, and easy battery change without a warranty sticker being voided.

I'm thinking 2 more banks of four cells each since cells are like R79 + enclosure R30
Please post pics?
And more when you've modded it?
May go this route. Where did you buy extra batteries?

Just don't learn the hard way about voltages. I have a nice shiny Gizzu, but my Asus router runs 19V. and the Gizzu only puts that out on the POE. I thought about picking up a passive POE splitter, but not sure how well Active POE from the Gizzu would handle a Passive output

EDIT - found some documents about this. It seems you can't do that.

Where did you see it had active POE? The POE voltage is selectable on the gizzu, so would that not make it passive? Specially ordered a new passive splitter to test (mine is missing - hate when that happens), and the output 'matches' whatever I select:

I must have misread the manual then. That opens up a number of possibilities. Now to find a POE splitter that handles 19V 2A 4mm
Especially since Takealot messed up my adapter order and sent me the wrong one.

If I had to hazard a guess, any old slitter will do. The one above is like R40 from scoop or R120 from T/A. Just keep the run as short as possible and try to use a proper CAT cable... if the cables do not get warm, you are good to go.

I looked into this when I was doing mine - the cables in a CAT 5 cable can carry a surprising amount of current a surprising distance. (Don't recall the numbers, but any run inside a reasonable sized house will be fine - for routers / Access points anyway).

Why a splitter exactly? Just chuck in any RJ45 cable then splice the wires!
That's what I did, pull out the power wires from RJ45, put a barrel plug on the end; use the AP's normal DC input. Bob's your mothers brother. (Obviously only works with passive PoE)

Wheres a good place to pick up a 4mm barrel plug?
