Okay cool, what is a good price for the Ratel 860p and the 50W Solar Panel (is there a specific brand that I should look at)? I saw this morning in my emails that Loot had the GIZZU’s Mini 8800mAh DC|POE UPS for R840 (I have discount through Multiply with Loot, so I normally check them and then the other online retailers that ship to my town for a reasonable price).

50W might be overkill though as he's only using 12w. Batteries have 64W/32W capacity (860p/430s), so even 20W/10W should charge them in just over 4 hours from completely flat while running all the devices.

What happens when you throw AC in the mix with the Ratels? Does it prioritise Solar over AC? Or is Solar only there to provide better runtime during AC Outage?
(Because even with a 50W panel, on a very cloudy day, it won't be charging a lot - nevermind also keeping your gear running 24/7.)

I like the Ratel 430S idea. I can decide if I want to charge it via Solar or normal and as I understand you guys, it would run the 2x5v and 1x12v adapters smoothly.

FYI, Sinetech only has the 50W Solar Panel in stock (that is, if I want to buy it now). Does the Ratel and the Panel come with the necessary wiring or do I need to buy extra?

It should come with one DC splitter cable, which you can use for the two 5V devices. You'll need another cable for the 12V device.

I'm not sure what cabling is required for the solar.

yeah not sure, i think the solar option is just to extend running time during power outage. obviously if its at night then you're screwed. :ROFL:

I guess the determining factor on panel size is budget. A 10w panel is R150, 20w is R400 and 50w is R800.

lol na ups won't be a fire hazard I have smaller UPS running 2 x 24Ah batteries charge time is a killer (a full day to charge on a 1amp charger) but it is quiet enough for a bedroom tv, and does what i need it to.
if you don't have anything yet i won't recommend buying a UPS to do this, then i would suggest getting a inverter and battery, but if you have a UPS already it's a fun thing to try.

Where did you see it had active POE? The POE voltage is selectable on the gizzu, so would that not make it passive? Specially ordered a new passive splitter to test (mine is missing - hate when that happens), and the output 'matches' whatever I select:

I must have misread the manual then. That opens up a number of possibilities. Now to find a POE splitter that handles 19V 2A 4mm
Especially since Takealot messed up my adapter order and sent me the wrong one.

If I had to hazard a guess, any old slitter will do. The one above is like R40 from scoop or R120 from T/A. Just keep the run as short as possible and try to use a proper CAT cable... if the cables do not get warm, you are good to go.

I looked into this when I was doing mine - the cables in a CAT 5 cable can carry a surprising amount of current a surprising distance. (Don't recall the numbers, but any run inside a reasonable sized house will be fine - for routers / Access points anyway).
