Thanks mercurial, will do the relevant investigations now. This will be my first foray in the Android space after being a die-hard Nokia supporter. They are going the way of the dinosaur unfortunately. So now just have to get my hands on the phone *taps finger on chin*
 
Can anyone report on the battery life of the device? Is it better than the SGS? How long does it last under various conditions?

RyanZA/Neuro please let us know if you chaps have tested out the GPS, battery life and eBook reader app the SGS2 comes installed with, no pressure;)

Yip, the battery life is also the one factor making me to doubt the s2. If it is the same as the dhd then it is going to be a hell of a drawback.
 
I thought the SGS2 would have better battery than the SGS?

Anyhoo, looks like I'm getting mine at the end of the month, will probably get a refurb from a friend who supplies :)

It has a slightly bigger battery and the dual core processor will actually use less power as well.
 
Battery life is much improved. Yesterday was a pretty heavy day for me - Lotsa Foursquare checkins (using GPS), calls, sms, facebook and twitter apps running in the background. Where I work there a weak 3g signal and with my Galaxy S, I would always set the phone to only use GSM ( the phone constantly trying to find a 3g signals is a big battery drain) , I left my SGS2 on 3g all day and managed to get just under 17 hours battery life before pluging it in to recharge. The battery reported it had 15% left at that time. That was on one full recharge.

Left the phone to charge overnight - unplugged it at about 5:20am this morning (I wake up early - the alarm is set at 5:30am, however Im always awake before it goes off!). Did some browsing via wifi - check market updates etc - turned the wifi off and headed to work. The usual Foursquare, Facebook, Twitter, weather and engadget widgets running in the background as well as email updates and the phone on GSM/WCDAM(auto mode) Also had a live wallpaper running (Microbes -awesome!). The phone has been unplugged now for 11H 49m and shows the battery is still at 59%. My Galaxy S would normally be around 30% by now (with the same apps running but with the phone set to GSM mode only)

So battery life seems good!

@ ruknroller: They say the SGS2 isn't the best Android phone, it is THE best phone, period.
 
Galaxy S II gets two software updates, some issues fixed

The Galaxy S II got two new updates before we could even order food after completing its own review. Hope we don't need to rewrite much. Anyway, we didn't know the phone had issues that needed fixing in the first place but someone at Samsung must've admitted to screwing something up. They claim a bug related to automatic-brightness was addressed, Swype was made more responsive and some connectivity issues were fixed.

The updates mean the Galaxy S II is now on the i9100XWKE2 firmware. It’s also rootable so you can go with custom ROMs and tweaks.

The updates are available through Samsung Kies right away.
