Sounds like you should be on a business account. Seriously, where do you have space o save all the stuff you download? I can understand someone going crazy when they get uncapped but a sustained level of 700gb per month blows my mind.

I average ~200GB/m. Just me.

700GB is hectic, but if you're providing for a family, it's not hard to imagine there's enough demand to get up there.

Telkom means SAIX news server right? How does that currently compare to IS? I've been with IS for more than 3yrs, so am a bit out of date

All the prices exclude the +-R148 for your phone line. The bundle prices include your data and adsl line fee (normally 425 for 4/10mb).

So the 4mb bundle of Telkom which is R699 is directly comparable to Afrihost's R697, Mweb's R899 and WebAfrica's R899.

Except for the 2 weeks around the switch to MTN, I have had no issues. And R200pm is a big saving.

Whilst the reduction is welcome, it does not go far enough. Even after the price cuts SA will still have one of the highest cost broadband in the world.

Telkom is under scrutiny. It needs to cut broadband prices so that the masses have access. Given that the number of fixed line subscribers has declined every year since 2000, I am surprised by why Telkom is not making these kind of announcements every month!


Given that Telkom's very survival is at stake one would have to ask why are they making such tepid moves?
Prices need to fall by say 80% to bring us in line with other developing nations; which are our competitors. And then maybe it will stem the decline in fixed line numbers. I cannot see how these price cuts will encourage anyone without a fixed line to suddenly get one. The costs are still way to high for what is outdated technology.


South Korea's standard is now a 1GB/s. What would Telkom extort from you for this!

Either they get their act together or they will be restructured as broadband access is a key element of economic growth. It already has the highest cost broadband access of the BRIC nations; soon we will be the laggard in Africa.


There is still the onerous monthly ADSL fee; not to mention the tying of voice line rental with ADSL line. What is needed is naked ADSL and a substantial reduction in the monthly fee. Otherwise broadband access is only for the rich!

Telkom has wreaked havoc on this country. It probably has cost us substantial economic growth and jobs.

Yea, difference is, alot of us still have our lines at Telkom -anyway- . So taking up the bundle is almost a no-brainer. I was still very hesitant to move my line to Mweb or Afrihost, due to exactly this kind of thing happening. I'm also at Mweb, i'll give it 2 weeks and see.

As much as I'd like to commend Telkom for slowly becoming more competitive, I just can't due to their hardware department being so mind-numbingly inept.

I haven't used Telkom data for a long time (due to their transparent proxies) so all I really want from Telkom is a stable, working 4mbps line. I mean it's not an impossible request as my line had been performing as it should for 3 years prior, but since last year however my speeds averaged ~0.6 - 1.4mbps and worse is I've been down again since mid November. That's a total of 3.5 months without any service from Telkom since this time last year. How is that even remotely acceptable?

Yeah I know they usually reimburse without hesitation but I still need to pay my ISP, for nothing! Why am I paying line rental + voice line rental anyway if Telkom cannot properly maintain their lines? It seems Telkom spends so much time on all the MSANS and 20/40mbps trials (which happens to be in the suburb right next door), yet they cannot be bothered to sort my line out? WTF!!??

See why, as much as I believe this announcement is a good move from Telkom, I sometimes believe I deal with a totally different company than most of you guys.

I was also hesitant. But if you want to switch your line to someone else it is handled same day.

Anyway, I'm happy with Afrihost. If this Telkom service is somehow amazing (not sure how exactly) then I will think of switching. Maybe if they offer uncapped VDSL for some ridiculous bundle price in March...

Well, they just cut me off for a couple of days without warning, citing technical issues but no real reason. They did reconnect me after I phoned and waited a day or two.
