I just sat on the phone for over an hour firstly with Telkom representitives telling me to dial different numbers and finally getting to the right place after holding for 40mins. Their response was... "all exchanges have been upgraded but 10mbps is not open to the general public"... Seriously, I had to wait that long for someone to be that unhelpful!
You should have taken the persons name, that sounds like a lot of bunk to me.

This is TOTAL BS !!!!

Hmmmm... depending on what they meant with the phrase "not open to the general public" because in my books that opens a can of worms... What exactly do they mean by it?

Huh? The result of the "ADSL Checker" has now changed for both my home and work numbers (central Stellenbosch):

ADSL Support : Your exchange support ADSL

Max speed supported by your exchange: 10240

Yet my router still says G.DMT? (ADSL2 and ADSL2+ are both enabled as possible modulations, so it would have automatically switched over if it was available).

Should I try and beg them to plug me into a different port?

If you are too far from the exchange and you can synch at 10mbps (ADSL2+) then they drop you to G.DMT and will lock you in at the next best speed that can synch and remain stable.

My SNR is 27.3 and my attenuation is 17.0 - I've been told that it means I can't be that far from the exchange... is that right? I haven't ever seen any of the newer style "cabinet exchanges" in Stellenbosch - just the old blue and green boxes. So I assume there is only one central exchange in an actual building and that is might be in or near the old Post Office (which is just down the street). Would that be a good bet?

Maybe I should go and flash my best smile at the shop - who knows, it just might work.

Seems they dreaded my threatened visit and bumped me up to ADSL2+ at home... but only syncing at 8Mbps. My attenuation is now 23.5 dB and my SNR 16.0 dB. According to ADSL Theoretical Speed Calculator, it estimates me at 1.7km from the exchange, though I swear it would have to be less than 1km, even in cable distance. Perhaps Telkom's cable loss is higher than average?

I also says should be able to go up to even 18 Mbps with this attenuation - or is the problem with the SNR?

International is twitchy as all hell... I need a new ISP.

Table View, CT. supports 10 Mbps. But telkom wont upgrade if asked. "It will be done when its done" So its a luck of the draw, even if the exchange does support it.

Not true. just dial into 0800 375 375 and get them to push it. The guys at the office cannot yet. I am getting between 6 - 8 because of the distance and crappy legacy wiring

Just make sure that you log in to your router and check the the noise margin down doesn't drop below 5.0db or it will lose sync.

Yes that could well be the issue. Try Afrihost they are quite good.

As for Telkom you could listen to your phone line, is it noisy? buzzing? popping? can you hear anyone else talking?

Any of the above and you have a solution to your problem. Call it in on 10215 get the ref number and then call 0800375375 once the problem is sorted and boost away.

My line is now synching at 6Mbps/645k but when I phone telkom to ask if we can attempt a higher speed, they tell me "Sorry but that exchange only supports 6Mbps".

Is this true? Why upgrade an exchange to 6Mb and not 10Mb, especially if they have replaced equipment?

So the checker says my exchange can do 10mbps, should I call 0800 375 375? They won't enable it automatically?

followed the link in the article got this error

404 Not Found
Resource /checkadsl/check.htm not found on this server

Telkom fail again?

Do they not enable it automatically I have 6 Mb downstream atm. Do you have to call that 0800 375 375 number?
However it says I should get 10Mb in my area.
What is a good range for downstream attenuation ?
am guessing 15 - 30 db ??

Ok the correct number is 0800 500 200, then option 2. They are slow unfortunately, the web says I'm upgraded, their systems says not yet, so I will call 15 sept again.
