Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

OK so I'm in this scenario now. I sold my house - need to rent for 6 months while my new place is being built... so I'm giving up my fibre connection temporarily :(

So now my only immediate option is to get LTE while I'm renting. Where i'm building there wont be fibre till at least the end of the year maybe....( or so im told )..

So which LTE option is the better one, and with whom ? MTN or Telkom, with AH or Axxess ?. Rain is out of the question - no way im paying R50/g for evening usage....

So I have to order now probably, but when i move - can i take the LTE with me ? I will move about 5km from where i live now...

Our options in this country really sucks if you cant get fibre....

Go with mtn if you have reception at both locations. You are allowed one move per year on axxess (officially). Probably more unofficially. You'll just move the router from your rented place to your new place. It will get blocked. Then you log a call to have it unblocked.

Power went today (load shedding) but I left for home yesterday. My dad called me and said there is no internet, light is red.

MTN, please sort out your tower on Dwarskersbos - there really is only one to sort out.

Yeah about that...

My understanding, when I spoke to the Afrihost person, is that with MTN Pure LTE you are fixed to a tower once registered as they provide you with a slot on that tower. If you move to another tower, you will be blocked.
With their Telkom fixed LTE offering on the other hand, you can move to any location as long as there are Telkom LTE services in the area.

My connection is down again from yesterday. Was working fine now nothing router shows connection is there, I can do a tracert and ping but nothing else works.

The last time it magically fixed itself and they asked me if I moved the router or the sim but this thing is fixed in my pc room for a year now. Never had these issues with cellc

Anyone else experiencing speed issues since last night? I’m in Rietvallei park Pretoria east. At times it’s totally dead then I restart and get around 1 Mbps down for a few minutes then it dies again. No Afrihost support over weekends

I'm also experiencing strange issues all of a sudden. I can't connect to any SSL-enabled websites. But I can connect to websites that are non-SSL. It's a big problem because almost everything uses SSL. Anyone else experiencing this?

No problems via axxess. I was streaming two netflix shows at once last night. Also in PTA.

I had to get Afrihost support to reset my connection from their side. Once they did that everything started working properly again.

I have this issue quite frequently, it's not only you.

It's a really strange issue. When this problem occurs I can still ping external ip addresses, DNS works fine, traceroute works fine, I just cannot make any outgoing connections that use encryption of any sort. HTTPS is blocked, RDP (Port 3389) is blocked, SSH is blocked, basically anything that uses any sort of encryption is blocked.

Exactly the same issue, I've had a support case open at afrihost for weeks about this.
I've even created a post at afrihost answers forum.

DNS/ICMP (trace, ping) works fine, normal TCP and UDP does not - when this happens if I reboot my router I think I get blocked from the tower as I get "connection profile invalid" message on my router.

Normal non-encrypted TCP and UDP connections work fine for me when this issue occurs, it's just encrypted connections that are blocked. If I reboot the router everything comes up fine and the data connection resumes to the tower without any error, but the blocked encrypted connections remain. The only way to get it fixed was for Afrihost to reset the connection on their side.

Hmm okay that's odd - when it happens to me I can't even telnet to anything over port 80 to get a website in plaintext.
Any existing connections work, but new ones are rejected. I might be wrong about the UDP getting blocked, as most of my apps do require a TCP overlay to init the session (think RTSP)
TCP is definitely blocked, and DNS definitely works, as does ICMP.
UDP is stateless so might not be affected by whatever is causing this.

When this occurs my voice calls continue if they are already running, and certain services which keep open connections keep working (steam, discord, skype, long-play youtube videos, etc)
If I kill these connections they're unable to resume, and new connections to anything are blocked.

It seems that whatever is upstream at MTN hits some kind of connection limit and starts blocking new connections?
When you get afrihost to reset it at an APN level it's freeing sessions?

I could speculate all day but we seem to have a similar issue and we need someone from afrihost to comment on what the actual problem could be.
