Cheaper 3G Prices - Rep?

Does anyone know when we will receive better deals? I mean R250 for MyMeg 500 is still expensive, when we will see the price either halved or the 500MB doubled?

Probably never. Vote with your feet I say. Bunch of crooks. You can get 6 gigs from afrihost for the price of 500mb from voda/Mtn. Disgrace!!

I know dude, it's robbery & someone should step in & stop these types of companies from ripping the public off. Unfortunately I live in a new complex & we don't have landlines yet & if we did I would run to Telkom with open arms.

The disgusting thing is that Vodacom and MTN don't even pretend that they're not operating a cartel anymore. Their data bundles rates are exactly the same.

They won't lower the databundle price, because the Telkom line rental is helping them keeping the cartel save and sound.

It's actually because there's no other competitor in the 3g/HSDPA market that could help push prices down. These two companies clearly came to an agreement and government is not doing anything to stop this.

Telkom line rental isn't what's keeping the prices up like this.

I had a look at an ADSL line (spent R10K on Airtime last year, all for data bundle purchases.) My research, done in about 5 minutes revealed that:

I use about 2GB of data each month = R389, and I have 1.4mbs download and 384kbs upload.

Now, if I had to replace that with a Telkom line, say a 512mbs one, I end up with the following charges:
Faster ADSL Line rental: R326p/m
3GB ADSL Cap from a ISP come in at about R200p/m

Total estimated cost therefor comes to about R500 odd per month. For that, I had to loose almost 1mbs on my download speed, I do not have a mobile internet connection anymore....

So VC charges R389...Telkom solution comes to about R500..makes you think? (Or am I missing the obvious?)

First of all, a 4Mbps ADSL line is faster than 3G. Secondly, if you're happy with 2Gigs a month, then fine, but for most us 2gigs wouldn't even touch sides.

10Gigs a month is more realistic, and at this level 3G is ridiculously expensive.

Same here, i'm also on the 2gig R389 a month bundle and i don't think you're missing the obvious.

If you going to browse a forum, do some internet banking & just general surf then 2GB might be enough.

If you want to download some stuff & game online then 2GB is not enough at all. I want speed & stability & that means Telkom > Vodacom.

Most people don't mind paying extra for a better service some guys don't.

Agreed - at 10GB per month one would be crazy to look at 3G!

My point is that for the average user, that uses 2 or even 3 GB per month, there is little difference between a Land line, and VC 3G, except that with VC 3G you would have a faster connection, and the advantage of have a mobile connection.

Sill makes me think!

IMO, we only use on Average that amount because we're limited by the cost.

IF bandwidth was cheaper/free, we'd be spending more/the same money on buying Hard Drives :D

The thing that gets me is that according to those adsl regs that came out a while ago, wasn't port shaping declared a no-no? That and the fact that im using about 1.5-2 gb a month makes 3g more of a reasonable option for me. The problem is that im about 100m from a tower with nothing in the way, direct line of sight stuff. on a clear day i sometimes get full signal, other times i get about half if im lucky. Quite often I get squat.

Now, I wouldn't mind paying R389 if the service was fast and reliable and signal strength didnt fluctuate like the oil price, but for the way things are now.... I aint so happy. Seriously considering jumping ship as soon as the telkom prepaid sims hit the market in durbs

Agreed! In the UK for example, you pay about 20 pounds a month, which gives you:
1) IP TV
2) 30GB Cap
3) 8Mbps garuanteed
4) VOIP
5) And many more...

Yet - it is still not enough for the lucky Brits...and here we dream about 10GB caps at 4mbps

that 100 fold increase in bandwidth by 2011 should go somewhere yes.

HSPA+ and Vodacom says that it has 1000 LTE ready sites, cellular providers laying out fiber and CellC investing 6 billion rand on broadband.

Come on, uncapped HSDPA

Yes, all this has to go somewhere.

I find the comparisons guys are drawng between the price of mobile broadband and fixed line alternatives very interesting, It is probably only in SA that we are forced to make this kind of comparisions, the facts are that if you were to go to most places in the world , 3G mobile is way more expensive than the fixed line alternative : Eg .. on Vodafone UK - for £15 monthly you will get 3GB of data on 3G compared to Vodafones Home broadband @ £14 per month excluding line rental for unlimited data usage on an 8Mb line not to mention the additional extra's like phone calls that are included ...... Lucky Brits indeed

Why are you comparing 3G to adsl????? You can't exactly use your adsl anywhere now can you?

I spend between R 389 and R 959 per month for access, and i know i can get much more data for those prices on adsl, but then i can only use my internet at home. I get 3.2mbps connectivity/downloads and can't complain about the speeds im getting. I do get the odd downtime, but that's understandable and its only a few hours every few months.

The reason we are comparing it to ADSL is because for many people 3G is the only viable alternative to ADSL.

Unfortunately many people live in new complexes where Telkom has refused to install phone lines, or live in areas where cable theft is rampant to the extent that Telkom refuses to replace stolen copper.

So we can't really compare our situation to that of the UK for example, where it's almost a god-given right to have a landline in your house.

Well, the point is and has been made that the differences between what Telkom offers and what VC offers, is so little that is almost comes down to speed and mobility. The rest is the same, and VC in some cases cheaper and the better option

Well, yes, but £15 converted, R178.54 for 3GB's, not as locally where we are paying R589
And secondly, they have fibre optic into their homes, not locally where you struggle just to get a adsl line!!!
