People there are still very grateful when they receive a tip though.

Crap service, it goes down. Super hot attentive waitress in thin shirt and aircon, it goes up, and so does the tip. Not that tip, but yes, that tip too.

15% as standard. More if they go above and beyond. Zero if they mess up my order or if I have to get up to find them. Normally that goes with pulling their manager aside and ask who trained them. In the restaurant business the number one thing besides food quality is great service, and not just a smiley person, waiters are direct to your customer sales people. A great waiter can easily add 50% extra sales to the tab. They should know the menu inside and out.
