iPhone 5 fails to be groundbreaking

That is how I understand it too.
Still a bit of an unknown. Think I will go Google a bit and see what comes up.

Would hate for it to be charging while talking. Could fry my ear drum, brain, or something else I need :)

Then it's cool but it's still in gimmick territory. I frequently need to use the phone while it's charging. You're basically making it into a cradle which for a mobile phone decreases its usefulness.

Logically thinking, I'm pretty sure the phone will have to be either touching or extremely close to the charging pad.

Explain something to me. If I'm wirelessly charging my 920 on that lovely charging pad and I need to use the phone for something, it stops charging while I'm holding it right? I mean it's mutually exclusive.

It only charges if it is ~4cm max away from the charging mat so I would say yes, it stops charging when you pick it up. If your phone is so flat that you have to keep it on charge while you use it just use a wired Nokia/HTC/Samsung/Blackberry charger.

Right, so...glorified dock then.

You can charge multiple appliances on it at the same time but since Apple said it is a waste of time you have your mind made up already.

I'm actually waiting for someone to tell me some real life advantage of it (i.e. solve a problem I have like too many wires) and you could have said that in the beginning. Now explain pls and don't make assumptions.

Q: You pitch up at a friends house for a braai and your phone needs to charge but oh no, his phone is on charge. What to do?
A: Well just place your phone on the charge mat next to your friends phones and let the magic of induction charging amaze you.

Q: Your phone's battery is flat but it is time to meet your friends at Mugg & Bean for a mocafrapachino. Your hipster status dictates that you absolutely have to be seen with your phone. What to do?
A: Well you could leave your phone on the charging area on the table and maintain your social standing without breaking a sweat.

That's a pity, it would be nice if it could be angled so that you could watch something on it in bed.

Agh man, just slip an elastic band around the phone and the charging mat, then put a cushion and inflated hot water bottle behind it, and let enough air out of the hot water bottle until the angle is just right, then lie back... all sorted. Wireless charging phone bed movie watching no problem.

/sigh

Just think different !

You also hang with a rarefied crowd of exclusive Lumia 920 owners?

... ok. I guess.

Look my new Tablet S came with a charging dock. It charges it and sits it upright at a perfect movie viewing angle, and lets it double as a bedside clock or picture frame. That is truly useful to me. But I'm not seeing the real value of this inductive charging. Give me a 5m radius and I'll proclaim it from the rooftops.

That's great so long as you ditch your current friends and find ones which have phones that charge wirelessly. MicroUSB (and lightning depending on how well the iPhone 5 does) will be the defacto for the next two years at least.

Do any of the phones that support wireless charging come with a dock right out of the box?

Lol, I see an episode of MrBean in there somewhere.

I guess one problem wireless charging could address is the universal charger/proprietary connector one.

Pretty cool. I imagine pubs, restaurants, boardroom tables could have a changing pads.

Yip, if it receives across the board endorsement. In the 920 announcement they changed the phones cover to demo the wireless charging feature....??

Provided there is cross platform compatibility for the tech than yeah. Wouldn't work in SA though and we all know why.

Now that would launch the value/practicality ratio through the roof. Would love something like that.

That's how I always understood it to work.

When they announced wireless charging on the S3 I thought brilliant, revolutionary, sold but alas...

Replacing one wired charger with another wired charging device is a sideways move IMHO.
