LCD and Plasma Bargains

within six years their prices will be inline with current LCD/LED prices.
Yeah, Samsung are not stupid, nor are they a research institution. First & foremost they're a business, willing to play the 'long game' for future revenues/profits.

Most developed markets are already saturated with current technology flatscreen TVs, so makes sense to divert focus/resources to a new (eventually superior price/performance) technology. They'll need a new carrot to convince the market to upgrade their current technology flatscreens in the future, otherwise they'll eventually fade out of business.

Roman - are you hinting at the fact that OLED could be better than plasma? That's absurd!

Where would LCD fit in here?
I recon CCFLs will all but disappear from mainstream in the next year or two, they're also not that energy efficient (my 40C530 with backlight on 12 uses 90W vs. 46D6000 with backlight on 17 uses 50W)

Edge LEDs however I think will be around for a while (occupying the budget to mid TVs, monitors, laptops etc.), since can be made thin, relatively energy efficient and dirt cheap.

If high to mid OLEDs start delivering on their potential I think the 1st Plasma casualty will be Panasonic, which relys on the enthusiast/pro market. Samsung/LG who knows, if their (mainly low end) Plasma units keep turning in a profit, they may keep them going for quite a bit (where they can), but I dont expect them to be greatly evolved in the next few years.

Ah, how refreshing. The voice of reason. :)

Wonder if there will be any really good specials on the D series TVs soon considering the E series is launching soon. Wonder how much the PS51D550 will go down to...

My only gripe with LCD is the diminishing return re viewing angles. Fix that and I'm converted... How are LED's in this regard?

Well they use the same LCD tech/matrix...

Viewing angles have improved a ton though with IPS and PVA.

Ja, that remains a deal breaker for me and LCD/LED...

Not only would I be fighting off other members of the household for the remote control but now we must contest who gets the seat right in front??!!!!!

Funny, the normal TV seating positions normally falls within the angular specs of most of the modern LCD panel technology. The best would be to go for a Pana IPS Alpha panel if the angles are such a great concern or stick with Plasma.

Ja. I got a 46" LCD in the lounge and a 50" plasma in the bedroom!! In the bedroom we watch from infront so the LCD should be in the bedroom but in the lounge there is windows and glare so the LCD is better suited to the lounge but with our L-shape couch viewing angles come into play... 6 of the one half a dozen of the other...
