so are you saying that it is not common to do above 200kB/s while keeping normal waking hours?

what type of speeds do you get during the day?

During the day - average 80kB/s, at night - average 80kB/s. 3am - 80kB/s. Was a bit better this weekend, but those are generally the speeds I get on NZB's/Torrents with this account. Browsing is ok, WoW latency is pretty awesome and consistent but in terms of downloading, it's not really amazing to say the least. Weird thing is I'm not a heavy downloader at all (done 9GB this month so far...) but I'm shaped to pieces. Others are getting full speed though, it's mind-boggling as one would think they would spread the shaping amongst all their users. I've tried to let them know that I understand shaping, but I'm struggling to understant just why i am shaped badly ALL the time. As soon as I switch to WA or even Axxess i'm a full speed (400kB/s).

Thanks, means im screwed though, if it was 230 Days I would have had a chance.

"gathering information", ud think this is difficult to come by data for MWEB itself....scary thought.

Hi rambo919

I received the following information that could assist you.

The retention period is 8 days and there are 3 concurrent connections to use.

Yea MWEB Ops you may want to double check the retention period

Actually he maybe right as there is a distinct speed difference between something recent and something old. Consider, if they have a retention of 8 days that is kept current but any older requests gets the server to query other serevrs and retreive that item but only keep it for eight days as well.

This is not quite the same thing meant with retention normally but might be how they are working. The oldest file I think I've gotten is just over a year and while speeds were low ( for that file 10-20kbps ) , it wasn't a bother as I wasn't in a rush so it just trickled down.

So there are 2 retention periods?

Obviously then I want to know the second one.

Not with NNTP - you only get almost full speed around 1am -> 5am, otherwise during the days its severely throttled.

For me most of the weekend it was around 100Kbps, and jumping to full speed around 10pm - whereas last weekend it was more like 30Kbps during the day.

I'm not sure but this is based on my current experiance with the servers. Also consider how big a data storage would have to be to hold 200+ days of usenet uploads! Most companies charge a premium and that goes a lot towards storage. Mweb offer it standard as part of the deal and are arguably the best local inclusive news provider.

Oh and just try your download, if it doesn't work you'll see straight away as the server will return the message "Article not found".

yeah, would be easier to know a definite official number though, for forward planning

For some reason I'm getting 0.5MB on my 4MB line. Its always been 100% perfect with mweb, and suddenly on Sat it slowed down? Not sure why.

I'm on 4MB uncapped, with a 4MB line. Line is 100%

Any help appreciated.

Hi Ap0c

Please PM me your MWEB account details and more information as to what exactly you are experiencing and I will investigate this.

Kind regards

as a matter of interest, what lead you to go the unshaped route?

To sum it up? I found the normal product to be absolute crap. I need to download when I want, how I want. Stream what I want when I want. No issues

I must agree, the Torrents are very dissapointing i generally see 50-80kb/sec even at 2-3am

Sometimes you get a treat and it does 120-150kb/sec i have yet to see torrents do a full 450kb/sec on my line. I think im going to look at another uncapped offering.

Hi Mono2

Please note that you will not receive full line speeds on our shaped products; perhaps the unshaped option is more suited to your needs.

Kind regards,

I remember now it was said that mweb news server draws from a international news server, this would explain the secondary retention. What is this news server and what is the retention it provides to MWEB? This would give me the real answer to my question.

My speeds are identical to yours - it appears we are in the same boat ^_^ Mind if I ask which city you're based in?

I think mweb news server mirrors saix news... which is updated using giga-news ...... (I do stand under correction)

I suspect not. With all the spate about SAIX peering, you really think Mweb is going to mirror SAIX? Also they've stated it is far cheaper for them to pull data internationaly than it is to transmit it locally.
