Actually it sounds like the new Telkom ASSIA systems automatically regraded your line down. ISPs no longer have the option to resync and regrade lines to new speed profiles - all requests now go via Telkom. So we are at the end of the day at their liberty. They have in turn implemented ASSIA which automatically regrades the line's speeds to what the system believes is the best sync rate for your line stats.

If it has been reported by us and the latest feedback is we're awaiting Telkom's confirmation of what is going on, then I can follow up for you (which we do with line related issues) but we're now 100% at their liberty relating to line regrades. I will dig into this and get back to you.

I'm so tired of being at someone's liberty and I wish there was something we could do about this.

Thank you for the explanation and effort CW is putting into this. I really appreciate it.

Are you billed at the price for an upgraded line or for the actual upgrade? Because upgrades are free...

Billed at for new line speed, but stuck at previous line speed.

Hi ZinSA. It's difficult to read that chart. Can you post an uncropped version with the axis information and timescale for me to look at? It seems like the average throughput there is much higher than the currently posted speed on your 2Mbps account...

I've checked the throughput on your account and it's managed 0.5 gigs in the last 57 minutes, which is close to your full line speed with 100% line utilisation over that time-period. I see the shaping still allows your connection to burst very frequently on downloads to full speed in peak as well, so as previously mentioned this is how the shaper works on downloads in peak.

The screenshot of throughput was at the lowest drop in speeds (the trough) as the shaper did its thing before allowing the burst to full line speed before and after as well (the peaks) meaning your average throughput there is much higher than the quoted speed, and this is confirmed in the data I can see on my end.

I will give it a go - thanks

I'm on Ubuntu now so can't check, but after installing it, under the settings menu there is an option that you can select to make it monitor only internet traffic and ignore lan/other traffic. This is very helpful if all you want to monitor is your internet. It will also give you the amount of data used by each program if you do this.

Hope this helps ;)

Currently have a 40mb business uncapped with Afrihost and use about 2.5TB per month. There have been a few issues lately with Afrihost and was thinking of giving Crystalweb a try. Sorry if this has been answered before, but I am wondering what I can expect in terms of shaping of downloads etc. I would be downloading, streaming, browsing, gaming during peak and non peak. Nice thing with Afrihost business uncapped is that I have never been shaped with that account - even with my 2.5TB per month. Seeing as the 40mb uncapped package with Crystalweb is only a few hundred rand cheaper than Afrihost, I'm hoping it would perform similarly. The last thing that I would want to do is move to an ISP that is going to shape me. I would then rather stick with Afrihost.

We do shape downloads on our network in peak traffic times - it is a dynamic shaping though. We are in the process of launching our business accounts, but these are actually prioritised for business use, as we don't believe in muddying the waters of product management by creating and marketing business accounts for home use. If you are looking for an unshaped service then the current home account is not right for your usage requirements I'm afraid.

@Crystalweb

I'm having problems of late during a gaming season. Latency issues makes the game unplayable.
Latency goes up to 2850ms far cry from the ideal 200ms.
This happened over the last two day's. Time frame between 17H00 and 20H00.
Last night i tried to do a pathping to blizzard that failed to the 3rd hop which is Telkom.
If i ping Telkom IP sub 15ms replies. I also cant us WinMTR. It shows always 70% packet loss.
In real terms i would not even be able to use your reporting structure or either play online.

Is there a way that you guys could monitor the line and find out where the problem lay's.
When i switch over to the backup account i don't see these problems.

It would seem that you are currently experiencing issues at your exchange such as exchange congestion.

Best course of action would be to PM crystal web and they'll investigate. Doesn't sound like an ISP problem but a Telkom one.

Possibly related question :
Can different isps use different links from an exchange to their IPC? I mean for example isp x goes from rynfield to Kempton to Jinx, isp y goes rynfield to Boksburg to Jinx?

You'd have to ask Crystal Web more info re the setup of their IPC's.

Telkom will control that routing to the various ISP data centres, but the routing can be a little different depending on a number of factors (like where IPC is purchased and what IPC is purchased on what equipment). It's not all the same equipment either depending on a few factors.

Thanks. When you say you shape downloads is that normal downloads or p2p? I try stick to p2p stuff after midnight so as long as normal downloads as well as browsing, streaming and gaming is great all the time then I'm happy

It's all download protocols. If it wasn't for 50GB+ Steam downloads and similar we could probably get away with leaving this traffic unshaped as well, but it's not feasible any longer with these sorts of massive updates and game downloads to allow that unshaped on the network.
