Yeah, unfortunately this is what happens when there's no redundancy. SEACOM is great because it's cheap but if it goes down, it's dead. At least with SAT-3 you have redundancy in failing over to SAFE.
Will be great when the other undersea cables like WACS etc. come online to ensure more failover options are available to ISPs.

Since WebAfrica uses SAT-3/SAFE they're flying at the moment. I guess having a few prepaid accounts with ISPs who use different backbones is probably the safest best to ensure you're always online.

i think this is only temporary.

doesent seacom have it own system connecting to london that will be available soon?

is this really the end of the world?

yes, stuff like this happens.

no real reason to fret about it.

at least they are updating us on the project.

Mweb new Uncapped 4Mbit here, Local and US bandwidth is normal, Europe running at 10KBps.

at least Mweb provisioned some alternative bandwidth. On of the reasons its word paying R50 more for internet.

Well the reason I am peeved is that I paid for uncapped satellite connection cause I did not want to use seacom, and guess what, today it has emerged, that the IS uncapped express accounts, get their "satellite" traffic from SEACOM!! Strange, I paid close to 1k, for an account that others sell at around R450, and I am completely throttled during the day!!

that does suck.

was it specifically stated that dont use seacom?

i am on mweb. not sure what they use.

i have international access. not at regular speed, but it is their.

This is quite sad and enlightening too.

I have Afrihost with Axxess for testing/backup purposes. I just cancelled Axxess because no one seems to have ANY redundancy or backup plan . Clearly i'm putting all my eggs in the wrong [same] basket here. Guess i'll be giving Web Africa a shot, now i wonder if WA still activates accounts at this time of day? Anyone know? I signed up, but can only access their client zone....

I watch the news. I'm no expert but I don't plan to paint my house in the rainy season and hope for a sunny day. You would think they knew what they where doing by now...

First off, that line was meant for the "didn't they check the weather report" people, not you, so don't take it personally. I was merely trying to convey that even if you look at weather reports they are a best guess, never 100% accurate. Else we would be able to predict all the weather anomalies and disasters we see on news.

I'm sure the Seacom guys did their best to time the needed repairs in the calmest time available, but something went wrong and they went over the estimated time. The weather changed and now they are stuck.

ISPs should be blamed here for not having contingency plans, not Seacom or the weather.

There goes the 99% uptime... pathetic... the cables surely cant be faulty already... it was laid into the seabed only last year... reeks like a BBBEE deal...

Yup, me too, R1069 from webafrica, also on satellite, but on seacom!!
wtf man, how can they be using seacom if its been around longer than seacom has been?
they should at least say that its going on seacom & therefore give us a cheaper rate & not keep ripping us off!!!
