Telkom 40Mbps DSL network back on track

I wonder what the 40Mbps line will cost? Seeing that there are some ISP with very competitive prices like the 10Mbps line for under R1000. I understand that mweb is relooking at their 10mb line uncapped package price and I hope they reduce the price which will force them to drop the 4mb line price as well... So if mweb does drop their 10mb line to under or close to R1000 I wonder what the 40mb line will go for... Im guessing around R2999... what do you guys think?

The cost will be about what you pay for 4mb now. The main cost of ADSL comes from Telkom's overcharged IPC model which is pricey because of limited infrastructure. The expanding of capacity will bring down charges significantly.

The upgrades will be rolled out to all ADSL-enabled Telkom exchanges, 3700 of them in the country, to be precise. AFAIK, all Telkom exchanges are supposed to be ADSL-enabled, well at least that's what I read a couple years back.

Used to be on 4MB....but did not see the benefit...except for the fact that i had to upgrade hdd every few months...
Doing 100Gb on my 1Mb line so upgrading to 2 would be awesome!!

I am still waiting for the 10MB service and can't afford the 4MB uncapped. this means absolutely nothing to most people I think

This is fantastic news for all of us as the telkom exchanges are too congested and these new exchanges can handle ALOT more users at over four times the current maximum speed...full steam ahead telkom get this stuff out to us ASAP.

If I'm not mistaken these new ones can also support fibre to the home in future?Mickeyd or anyone else clued up can confirm this?

My line went up to 8MB and suddenly was restored to 4MB where it now stayed for over a few months, so 40MB I prolly will never see light off, never.

To all of you who do not understand:

• your DSLAM is being replaced by an MSAN
• an MSAN can handle everything a DSLAM can an much more
• an MSAN has a much, much higher capacity (port/rack/slot) than a DSLAM
• it converges multiple services (well, at least it has the capability to do so), ie. VOD, IPTv converged to your doorstep via a single node. In other words you don't have to worry about your download being slowed down while watching House via your Smart TV
• enables FTTH

You did of course read the article I'm sure. The same one which happened to be about Telkom wanting to revamp their infrastructure.

All that I am saying is that they must stop talking BS about 40Mbps, they cannot even deliver 1Mbps to congested areas.

First fix the infrastructure to deliver 1Mbps, then they can start talking about 4Mbps, and maybe in 2025 they can talk 40Mbps !!!

To all of you who do not understand:

• an MSAN can handle everything a DSLAM can an much more

While I agree with the idea to wait, it's also not useful to tell people that they should be patient, their problems may be fixed in the next few years.

What is the link to your doorstep i.e the last mile? Also you read the OP article, maybe now work will proceed

Anyway, I would say I hope this will be a success. new hardware and a new infrastructure in 5 years?

OK, we will see. I don't believe that Telkom can / will achieve this.

In the meantime I am forced to use mobile internet because of exchange congestion.

I cancelled my 4Mbps line because I was only getting speeds that you would expect on a 384kbps line, even though my line quality to the exchange was excellent, and the line synced at 4Mbps.

My typical mobile speed is 5Mbps DL, and 1Mbps UL.

Yeah I'm in the same boat and my mobile speeds are slowly coming down also...we need LTE to keep them up.

This is not something that is going to happen overnight.The timeline in the original article to get this completed fully is 3-5 years.

Yes it would probably not even stop after 5 years...upgrades are a continuous part of any companies strategy but atleast they'll tackle the busier exchanges first from the looks of it so the most affected users should see results WAY quicker than 3 years IMO.

5mbps download is not bad at all....what network and area is this in?

This is on Cell C and it is near Wanderers Cricket Ground.

Vodacom is even faster but it is too expensive.

OTOH I have zero MTN reception, not even phone calls. 8ta 3G works, but not great.
