Telkom ADSL 8Mbps :)

/me is still marvelling at my 34-39kbps speeds :o Hey, I had dial-up for a very very long time okay, the 384 line is lightning for me :p

You can check your own DSL line stats through your router. Mine are good enough for 8mbps, or at least someting higher than 4, but I'm guess 8 should be fine.
 
Can someone list the stats required for say 512, 1/4Mb and 8Mb connections?

It's just so we have some vague idea if we are capable of the various conns.

Like SNR and US/DS speeds....

well just did a DSL Interrogation on cust line,
found a funny thing it say their dsl rate is 8128kbps..
try a test later 2day adn c what is say then.


ATUC Status No Defect There no defects on the line.
ATUC Current Rate 8128 kbps The current downstream speed established between the DSLAM and customer’s modem, e.g. 4096k, 512k or 384k.
ATUC SNR 13.1 dB The signal level compared to the noise level. A value above 6 dB indicates sufficient signal strength. The higher the signal value, the better. Does the customer have an electric fence? This could cause an increased in noise levels resulting in a reduction of this value.
ATUC Attenuation 5 dB Attenuation refers to resistance. If this value is high, then the signal quality is low, and vice versa. Is the customer far away from the exchange? Long copper lines could be the cause of attenuation. A value above 55 dB is of concern (bad).
ATUC Max Rate 384 kbps The max downstream speed governed by the DSLAM at which it communicates to customer's router.
ATUC Min Rate 192 kbps The min downstream speed governed by the DSLAM at which it communicates to customer's router.

ATUC Alarm State No Alarm Is displayed if any faults are found on the DSLAM port.

well that test was done via telkom isp access to their systems.
i did test on other line nubmers i know which are 4mbs, and they reported 4096. so who knows hey..
 
Hmmm... I just peaked at 770K/sec for a couple of minutes. Are they fiddling around with this stuff 'cos that's 8MBit speed levels.

half the people cant even sync at 4mb so 8mb must not come until they fix my line :p:p:p:p:p:p no1 shall have it until my line is good since i get 2mb ul shoudnt get 8mb :D na im just joking hope they fix everyones cables slowly so we all benefit

How can you check if the line is good enough for over 4mbps?

You have to be able to get into your router/modem's setup page. From there is should be pretty easy, look for a page called stats or status etc and find the Line Attentuation and SNR Margin (both upstream and downstream) values. You can post those here and we'll be able to tell you.

Unfortunately all routers are different, so I can't help with the first bit.
