Telkom FUP cap errors

Use the Telkom Customer Portal to track data usage – Not SAIX

MyBroadband contacted Telkom about the matter, and the company acknowledged it had identified a mismatch in reported figures.

“The Telkom Customer Portal is the main source of Telkom ISP customer usage data. We have identified the misalignment with information published on the SAIX usage page and the Telkom Customer Portal"

Utter nonsense. I have a 10MB (the maximum download I have observed is 800-900Kbps) line and on the 13th of January the telkom portal says I downloaded 86.62GB + 7.13GBGB and 19th of January I downloaded 71.20GB + 11.88GB of data. That is physically impossible. Even running at 100% line speed that would take 3 or more days.

Check the graph above. Look at the 13th there. It claims that over an 17 hour period, 45.62GB was consumed on this 4Mb line (While on FUP2). Now lets do the math together.

For this calculation, we're going to be generous. We're going to work it out with ASSIA syncing the line at 5Mbps, we're going to include overheads into the calculation, we're going to ignore FUP, we're going to make the hypothetical line PERFECT (1db attenuation and over 9000 SnR), zero congestion on the exchange and eliminate all contention on the ISP side.

So we're syncing at 5.120Mb/s. Devided by 8, that makes it 640KB/s.
60 seconds in a minute gives us 38.400MB a minute, which gives us 2.304GB an hour.

I always thought night surfer was between 0:00 and 06:00, but its been pointed out to me that its actually between 0:00 and 07:00. 7 hours. That makes the amount of hours that counts towards FUP 17 hours.

So according to the above calculations, the absolute maximum you can pull over that 17 hour period is 39.168GB, where the portal reports 45GB, including FUP2 throttling. I don't think so.

Thank you for asking on our behalf. Would you kindly follow up after some time to see if Telkom have indeed "identified the misalignment" and advise what causes it? As some members have mentioned, some of the stats on Telkom's portal cannot be true as they are physically impossible to reach given the line speed available.

1024*5 = 5120kbps / 8 = 640kb/s * 60 seconds = 38400kb / 1024 = 37.50MB * 60 minutes = 2250MB / 1024 = 2.197265625GB per hour * 17 hours = 37.353515625 GB

Sigh, looking at the portal does not fix anything.

I hope MyBB puts pressure on Telkom over this. Saying that users should stop verifying their data usage is not a solution.

No, it's wrong and I've fallen victim to the FUP because of it.

Yes, of course, it's our fault for noticing. Wow, now it makes sense. Thanks Telkom/

At the very least they should disable the FUP until they have resolved the matter.

That doesn't do much for softcap users

As far as resolving the matter goes, I predict their method of resolving the matter will be blocking access to saix user stats. Isn't that how OpenWeb fixed the same username sold multiple times issue?

So I complained to Telkom on twitter and they rectified the problem.

They are going to pull the SAIX usage portal if it causes them this amount of 'issues'
I hope not. It works for most other isps as well, not just telkomsa accounts.

Why in the world are you still using Hellkom?
There's your bloody problem

R999 for 20mb A/VDSL uncapped, including line rental and voice with an very reasonable FUP?

No one else comes near. Regularly do over 1.5tb per month.

Can't wait for Fibre.
