Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

Happy New Year everyone :)

Just a heads up roll over data not showing again either on clientzone nor mob app.

@AfriMan

Afriman - how can I move over to you guys?
I use MTN FLTE through Supersonic but the night time data does not roll over despite what their T&C's say. And still trying to get some assistance from them regarding this for the last month.
You guys seem to get your night time roll over data despite also being MTN FLTE.
Is it a case of just moving the sim card over to you or do I need to do a whole new order?

@AfriMan let me know when you have time for a real-time DM conversation to discuss and query a few things. Thanks.

Hi there

Happy to chat over PM.

Not sure we can do a SIM swop, I'd have to check with our technical guys. But should be a pretty simple matter to ship you a new SIM, so maybe best to keep it simple in that sense. But let's chat more on PM.

Weird question but, I realise LTE is different from ADSL but my ping generally is quite high in gaming servers.

Local ping: 100
EU: 240

Is there something I can do to bring this down or is it normal
I get 40 to 50ms from PTA to ZA csgo servers. Very playable. This was on mtn fixed lte as well as cellc fixed lte. Friend in pta was on telkom lte and got same pings for csgo. Vodacom lte same same.

That being said i got 70+ ms on vodacom while on holiday in hermanus...

I've switched to a different tower in the same town. A few weeks now - not blocked.

I can confirm. Dont switch modems and dont switch towers. Mtn will block you within a few hours.

Dotcat u sure youre on a different tower?

Yes - the router is actually positioned equidistant between 3 towers. First time I switched manually to see if I'd get blocked and then then it began happening automatically as the one tower went down due to load shedding. I've also switched between 2 modems and have not been blocked.

I believe the people getting blocked have moved significant distances and have tried their sims in non approved devices.

So how does THIS work then - whats the point of LTE if you cannot move with it....like a cellphone...

MTN is preventing towers from getting congested. If you move it around it's hard for them to see where congestion is.

The approved router list is there to prevent 1 LTE band to get congested and spread the load over the LTE bands they rolled out being Band 1, Band 3 and Band 8. If everyone uses a B315 the everyone will probably stick to band 3. 3 or maybe 4 fixed LTE users with big caps on band 3 will congest that band causing packetloss and latency issues. They probably don't want that because their mobile customers are the big spenders considering how affordable this fixed LTE actually is.

OK so I'm in this scenario now. I sold my house - need to rent for 6 months while my new place is being built... so I'm giving up my fibre connection temporarily :(

So now my only immediate option is to get LTE while I'm renting. Where i'm building there wont be fibre till at least the end of the year maybe....( or so im told )..

So which LTE option is the better one, and with whom ? MTN or Telkom, with AH or Axxess ?. Rain is out of the question - no way im paying R50/g for evening usage....

So I have to order now probably, but when i move - can i take the LTE with me ? I will move about 5km from where i live now...

Our options in this country really sucks if you cant get fibre....

Well you are going to have to check coverage and obviously have a LTE-A router minimum.

Telkom and MTN is pretty much your only options really.

MTN Fixed LTE on Afrihost will run over their own network where the Telkom simcard will stay on the Telkom network.

May I ask how you manually switched?
