Right, I've decided... it's time I cancel my DSTV subscription. After a quick perusal of the Afrihost, MWEB and WebAfrica websites I realised that I'm paying the same (actually no, I'm paying less than) my DSTV subscription for Uncapped ADSL. Now, sure, I know the whole legal mambo jambo about downloading seasons and movies, but... anyways, carrying on: I can save R700 every single month of the year. Here's basically my reasons for cancelling it:

  • I can save R700 every month (R8400 per year… hey, I can buy an iPhone or S3 every year!!!)
  • I get the episodes early… and in some cases months before it actually airs. Sure, DSTV has been great lately with some shows only being a week or two old, but still… I'm not a patient person.
  • I get to watch what I want to watch, when I want to watch it.
  • And finally, but NOT LEAST: Every single technology company that's worth their salt decreases their prices year after year (or at the very least keeps it the same). But NOOOOOO… DSTV keeps increasing the prices. For crying out loud!
  • Also, I don't watch sports, so don't even get me started on the sport channels.

Oh, and I forgot... I can buy a TB hdd every single month (if I don't get myself a new phone that often lol).

Seriously... R8400 per year?!?!!?! And I get advertised up the behind during my shows?!?!!? Nah that sucks DSTV!

So... cancellation email sent!

I just dropped my DSTV to compact... Use DSTV for background noise and CNN/BBC while I chow my breakfast. As well as for my wife to watch while I'm gaming so my ping isn't affected, when I want to watch some series I switch to netflix.

Just remember if you go for Mweb uncapped they still get your money ... ;)

Some people still pay for series and movies?

@ibyte: Care to give a breakdown of what you will pay now monthly as opposed to R700pm for DSTV?

Hulu offers more recent episodes than Netflex does.

^ this

Hulu is for current, but I find Netflix has more content.

edit: Ooh and do not forget BBC's iplayer(use hola to access) either.

As for lcbxx price question:
Neflix/Hulu = $8 pm each (this explude some movies that you sometimes have to pay extra for)
DSL = your pick of uncaped pricing

Check out http://www.ibtimes.com/amazon-prime-vs-netflix-vs-hulu-plus-what-best-online-streaming-deal-378782 for a breakdown.

I found that since I got Netflix and Hulu, I haven't even downloaded anything. I don't miss DSTV at all. Don't know if that will change, but there is so much to watch!

Come on guys, anyone care to give a monthly cost breakdown for their broadband-based services?

Sure, off the top of my head

Prior to cord cutting:
Do uncapped R847.37 per month (incl line rental etc)
DSTV: R590
Total: R1437.37

Post cord cutting:
Do uncapped R847.37 per month (incl line rental etc)
Netflix: R85.00
Total: R932.37

Savings: R505 per month.

Don't you need Unotelly or a VPN as well?

I would so love to cancel DSTV but Telkom won't replace stolen lines in Midrand so no ADSL for me and 3G is too expensive for streaming

And btw, you could watch Netflix, etc just fine on a 2mb uncapped bundle. I was worried that it would be too slow, but its not. Apart from the first 30 seconds or so in the beginning when it loads, I don't find any other hiccups during the rest of the movie / series.
