I don't normally download like that, just doing it this weekend trying to get to 1 star to see what happens monday for science :)

I'll bet your bottom dollar, it will perform like an OW account during the day :D

I'm interested in what happens after 5pm.

My Tests are complete. verdict: OpenWeb Home Uncapped is rubbish.
I don't see for WHO these packages are geared towards, because no matter what package you take, what ADSL speed you have, what time of the day or night, or what protocol you are using - it just doesn't work - you will get 100kbps max and that's it. (Sometimes, if you're lucky) 90% of the time it will only be around 50kbps.

It's 8PM on a weekend and all I'm getting is 51kbps.

speedtest.net works perfect though... all day all night.
So I guess if you like to watch a picture of a speedometer going up and down this is the package for you.

As long as OW are guaranteed two months of payment...

I think all these uncaps are the same, only with some you get it all sooner.

Thanks manib, your post is a verbatim description of my OW experiences and recent sentiments.


I'm a long-time openweb client (>3 years) on Gold 2Mbps and I finally decided to call it quits and cancelled my account. I thought in the interests of consumer activism I would add my voice to the number who have posted here following a similar path (I've read the forums over the years but never registered to post until now). Short summary: During most of those 3+ years I was quite happy with openweb even though i thought their methods (frequent account changes, vague answers on shaping/contention, "only 133 account left!" etc) were a bit unorthodox. I often got full line speed for weeks at a time... until this year.

The main thing I want from an ISP is reliable browsing, quick download of small (up to 20-30 MB) files and to be able to leave large downloads / torrents on 24/7 and i'm perfectly OK if they get shaped to say 10% of line speed most of the time (though SOME of the time I expect closer to 100%) and even less than that as long as its not too often. Considering the premium price paid for a GOLD account, this all seemed reasonable.

Here is my current experience: daytime internet is useless on ALL protocols. Sometimes just slow, sometimes too slow for pages to even load. Everything runs "OK" at night and on weekends, but still, I notice that my line speed might as well be theoretical because I NEVER get that, even in short bursts. This doesn't seem to me like "shaping", i.e. where SOME protocols are given lower priority, it is more akin to what I would call "throttling", i.e. an overall reduction in maximum bandwidth. Definately nothing that could be described as "premium" or "high-priority" network access. At the very least, it seems that openweb doesn't provision enough bandwidth for their customer base.

So I finally decided (after months of hoping that it will get better by itself) that the situation is intolerable. I emailed their support complaining, they ask for a traceroute and a speedtest.net test. Now here I think is some deviousness on their part: speedtest.net gives me full line speed, but other speed tests, including my own web server on a http download gives about 10% of line speed. The lesson: DON'T BELIEVE SPEEDTEST.NET on openweb accounts - it seems to be prioritised for fast speed. When I persisted in my complaint they basically told me that "they shape during busy times" (i.e. i have unrealistic expectations) and recommended that I get an capped unshaped account. So, no joy or even hope of improvement, and I cancelled. Too bad I'm stuck with them until the end of December, given that I failed to cancel before 25 October.
 
Openweb has really gone down. Im on the 2mb gold uncapped account(leon edition) This is use to run awesome for online games, but now it sucks. My account details have beens changed 12 times already... So my account use to run fine , today i get told its because of shapping. So why did this not affect me before????????????????
 
I was a Gold account user for 4+ years but due to the basically unusable status of this "premium" account during business hours (a phenomenon which only began some time this year I might add) I thought I'd migrate to an unshaped capped account.

When I requested to be migrated to a capped account they came with their mandatory debit order BS even though I've been paying them faithfully and without fail via EFT every month for 4+ years?!...I then told them to get stuffed.

My unshapped account just works. A few of my friends have joined and we are pleased so far.

What does really upset me is when I go during these times to speedtest.net it is fully unshaped and I get full line speed of 10mb Down.

I have several times now tried to address the issue through the call centre but a technician never gets back to me. It is really shocking service currently.

Can anyone advise any other ISP?

My GOSH! What a *****ing useless account this is - I too have the Gold Uncapped Unshaped product. Its WORSE than dialup during the day!!!!!!!!!

After one excuse to the other, the latest reply I got this morning was:

"Hi Userxxx

Contention ratio is the major problem here.

Your service level is unshaped, but as a high contention.

I would suggest we move you onto a High Value Capped solution which allows you to eliminate contention

As we speak now I am getting 1/9th of my line speed via browsing. I will be taking my wallet elsewhere.
 
I had to admit, during the day, I also have horrible browsing speeds but normally what I do is change my account over to 1 of a few "FREE 1GB" type accounts that I have and use that till I change over and get full 2MB speeds from OpenWeb.
I had a 10MB line, then 4MB line, I basically downgraded my speeds because I never got my full speeds with OpenWeb.
Still, when I have issues, I normally get sorted out super fast (via using the support e-mail address)

Well just as some more info. I have phoned this morning and they said they will recreate my account. They did that and it is still a problem. I have no improvement whatsoever.

Getting +- 200Kbps at the moment on NNTP. not bad.
Dunno if they decided to loosen the noose a little for us or if it's just because I've logged out and been using my 10Gb Telkom account for the past week?
 
I'm on capped unshaped account. Home DSL uncapped at OpenWeb is crappy. Didn't work for me only after 12:00 am.
Browsing was no good. Streaming was okay.
