Do you want/need an APN that allows connections initiated from outside the APN?

When I use the APN Unrestricted on prepaid it does not work. No one was able to explain the issue, but can I take a guess? btw : I have a prepaid account.

Could it be because I don't have a data bundle loaded perhaps? I have airtime on the prepaid card though.

Without any data bundles loaded, I get to websites using the APN internet and internetvpn, but when I switch to Unrestricted, NOTHING.

So because Unrestricted is not allowing me to surf anywhere it does not obviously allow anything incoming.

This is just a wild guess, Is there anyone will to test my theory?

No jasondeklerk i have been using the unrestricted apn with and without pre paid data bundles for almost a year now and it was not always stable but it worked.

Are you sure you've been provisioned for it?

OK, need some help, without reading through the whole 26 page thread.
I am currently connecting through the 'internet' APN, would using the 'internetvpn' or 'unrestricted' APN's help with stability at all? I am having a lot of issues ranging from not being able to connect to HSDPA, or connecting but not having any data throughput.
From what I understand, to use the other APN's I need to be provisioned to use them. Do I just phone 155 and ask for them to be provisioned?

Now i definitly know that it is not an area issue ,Brought my router in with me this morning to my office in midrand and still i am able to connect to the unrestricted apn but no data in or out , And yet the internet and internetvpn are working 100%.

I`ve finally found this post because 155 cannot help me.This is what i have so far with exhaustive testing with multiple sim cards.I`m using a Digi connect VPN modem with dns built in all over the country even Twee buffels-met-een-skoot-doodgeskiet.They are used for industrial telemetry.I only use prepaid for these.Up until 4 weeks ago all of them was working.I then had two more provisioned which never worked. The tests that i did was with two new provisioned cards on that was working and my personal contract card all provisioned for all apn`s.all used on the same modem. When using INTERNET they all work connecting to DNS,When using INTERNETVPN they all work connecting to dns,When using UNRESTRICTED only the contract works to dns and no others even the one that was connecting to dns.Doing the same test on my HTCP3300 proves exactly the same point.I am however receiving the 41. range when it dials in and that IP is available for approx 20 sec then it seems like the IP get put on a hold mode and blocks all traffic.Advance data centres seems baffled. What is the question you ask? WHY?

Valid question.

I have phoned vodacom again, and made sure that have the 'Unrestricted' apn setup and they confirmed everything is working correctly.

I agree it is not an area issue. I have used my (other ) 64K 3G sim, and it works, but when I switch to the 32K prepaid account, then I get nothing. I have airtime and made sure the APN is spelt correctly.

Come on guys, I cannot believe no one in this forum besides myself and carlito has this problem?!?!

3G unrestricted vs. internetvpn

We run a webmail server at the organisation where i work. we would like to be able to provide out employees with access to this when the are travelling. do we have to use the unrestricted apn or is it possible to have only http ports opened on internetvpn

we also need to be able to connect to our server via ssh

what is the quickest process to follow to get this activated?

thanks

Hi v3g it is but this has been up and down a lot the past 4 weeks... I've got a client that we are using this for remote access and I've not been able to get in on their systems on and off for the last 4 weeks. Why is this apn so unstable?

Endless problems

Firstly kudos to all the people on this forum, you guys really helped a helluva lot... Not gonna rip anyone off here.

I have had endless problems connecting to the 'unrestricted' APN... I phoned, faxed, filled out forms, begged, cried and was on the brink of self execution. {a mild exaggeration there}

Then like a miracle, I received an sms:
'Good day, Please be advised that the unrestricted apn has been activated as per fax request Kind regards, Vodacom Customer Care (Kashiefa Greef)'

HALLELUJA. not.

I now have an IP range of 41.x and none of my ports (ex 80,21 normal ones) are open. I am using mobile connect version HOST11.107.03.00.03.
Can anyone help me? I will regard you as a god and generally superior to me in every way.

For Vodacom.
Why the hell cant you just have section of the website dedicated to all possible issues regarding VPN,APN,unrestricted etc. I wasted time, money and more time trawling the web for a simple solution.

Alas they buggered me around.

Thanks to everyone, Open Source, ftw.!

The 41.x.x.x shows you are on the unrestricted apn.

Are you making outgoing connections?

You're 100% sure you don't have a firewall / virus scanner / etc. blocking incoming ports on your PC?

Where are you based?

What are the charges for using the different APN's?

@w1z4rd, the default internet APN provides you with a shared IP address, while the internetvpn & unrestricted APNs both provide you with a publicly routable IP address.

PS: IIRC forumites were quite vocal & campaigned quite a lot to ensure that there is no fee attached to using the internetvpn & unrestricted APNs.
@ic or whom ever. Are any of these APN's chargeable if so why?
