Do you want/need an APN that allows connections initiated from outside the APN?

10 deep breaths. I'm also waiting as fast as I can but I also know you have been pushing this since the beginning so when it is available, it will be available. :)

Any news on when the service is gonna be available yet V3G , Just wondering why vodacom is taking so long ??????

I was actually hoping this week, but for some reason it slipped again.

It's already available, according to the Vodacom website. Go to http://www.vodacom4me.co.za, register your MSISDN and get a password.

Then log in, go to
"My Account" -> "Services" -> "Modify Services"

Click on "Activate Unrestricted APN".

It comes up with a notice that it will be activated within the next 24 hrs.

So now I wait and see what happens. If this doesn't get activated, Vodacom will have a bit of egg on their face for taking the activation procedure live without having the backend in place.

I'm on the 'unrestricted' APN

My bad. Selected the incorrect profile. Just a case of premature e**********. I'll try not to let it happen again. :D

Exactly, the vast majority (99.9%+) will be just fine on the internet APN.

When do you need the internetVPN APN?

When you use some security / authentication software that gets confused by NATing. Most decent VPN clients are not affected by this.

When do you need the Unrestricted APN?

When you need to initiate a connection from outside the Vodacom data network to a GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSDPA device on the Vodacom network. For example:

1) Doing desktop support
2) Up- or downloading a file
3) Hosting a WEB site

Because the incoming IP ports will be open, you WILL get port scanned by every hacker and his dog out there (and will pay for the privilege!), so I'd suggest you provision both the internet and unrestricted APN's and only switch to the latter for the period you need the functionality.

If I want to use 'internetVPN', must it be activated on my account first? If yes, what is the quickest way to do this?

155 did not work. Had to call 0821082. Used callback fuction. They called back, but never heard of internetVPN. I told the lady to go and find out. She did. Hope it is activated in an hour like she promised.

According to me Vodacom's internetvpn apn still doesn't work. When I changed my apn from the standard 'internet' to 'internetvpn' I still got a internal ip but only on a different range. If I remember correctly on normal apn I got 10.10.x.x and on internetvpn I got 10.15.x.x or something like that.

On MTN - when using the 'MTNVPN' apn i did get a pub ip.

Feel free to correct me where I am wrong.

I am connected on the 'internetvpn' APN. When i use 'internet' i get 10.x.x.x and when i use 'internetvpn' i get 196.x.x.x.
Have you asked for it to be activated?

Hmmm, sounds like you called from a rival network? - it is always best to call Vodacom from a cellery phone using a Vodacom sim card - even the Vodacom sim card in your data card would do the trick...

No. I did call from my vodacom sim and phone. You cannot enable a the callback feature when calling 155. It never gives you that option. You also never get an option to speak to an operator.

In the end I connected to my company network and could VNC into my work PC. Did not even have to use the internetVPN APN.

A few points:

- the internetvpn apn is case-insensitive.

- If you're provisioned for the internetvpn apn, you'll get a routable (non-10.x.x.x) IP.

- As johan found out, you seldom need the internetvpn apn. It's always better to stay on the internet apn where possible.
