DStv Now explains low-quality RWC streams

Then why is Catch Up content also poor quality?
 
It's called Akamai and yeah bandwidth limitations is real especially if everyone is trying to watch 1080p

Quick run down of some very rough numbers.

1080p stream using roughly 5-6Mbps bandwidth (1.7GB per hour roughly/ 60 /60). I have NO IDEA how many people were streaming but I assume a lot. Let's say 100 000 People.

6Mbps x 100 000 = roughly 6Gbps of bandwidth being served just on this channel to various ISPs with various peering. It's a lot of bandwidth

I personally watched the SpaceX Falcon Heavy in 1080p - no problems.

Uhm.. those are very different to sports.

Something I noticed.. with the Cricket World Cup games it was mostly very clear until there was rapid movement (follow ball along ground fast) while rugby has these pan shots and close up action and switches between cameras fast.. ie vastly different set of requirements

So given those factors I’d say their requirements are bit harder.. BUT even steady shots that I saw on DSTV now were pixelated making me question the bandwidth allocated as it seems weird that a steady stadium shot in game looks bad.

I wonder if they have ISP level strategies (multicast from there?) to use bandwidth more effectively.. remember ISPs do caching etc for YouTube, Netflix already to reduce the cost besides local content serving. Would be interesting to know if they actually planned this or went it alone.
 
check again next time with these high "DEMAND" games..... it happens only when these PUCKERS MONEY SUKKERS doing it out of Multi Choice up in Randburg when they do the rugby commentaries!!! ripping the public OFF.... and sucking it up into the pockets of the monopolies of..... you you WHO..... the media house conglomerate......wuth listings now in somewhere Holland.... and bee handouts in........ enjoy the ride...

lol, streaming is streaming regardless of the content. The bitrate and the codec of the stream determine how much blockiness you get during scenes with rapid movement (zooming or panning).

Again, don't make this out to be something unique. F1TV streams the Formula 1 with multiple camera angles, different radio channels all in realtime and you can pick what you want to view.

South Africans are happy to accept these shitty excuses, the rest of the world won't accept it.

Well Netflix has been giving ISPs devices to deploy within their network. Maybe DStv should do the same -- that way they won't saturate the peering links.

It is a shame NAPAfrica doesn't provide weekly traffic graphs anymore. It would have been great to see if the traffic did spike...

I think Google does the local caching for Youtube and their other in-house services. AFAIK the ISPs simply peer at NAPA, they don't do their own caching, unless you're talking a large ISP which would host a server from Google on its own network.

The useless gits that are MonoChoice are well known for hiring developers on contract basis. Also their choice in candidate is usually those of lesser skills.
