I should have left Vodacom long ago.

Yes, the speed is slightly slower on MTN than Vodacom, but I vote for a reliable, always on connection over a speedy and very unreliable connection.

I think I will go the same route. The last month and a bit has been a nightmare on VC. Disconnects non stop, horrible throughputs to only have good service 1% of the time. Maybe out of spite I will move all my contracts over because I am so fed up with VC's craptastic reliability.

Slightly off topic, but this info might benefit other users.

Since installing Win 7, I have been experiencing extremely slow e-mail downloads from Gmail (POP3), especially large ones, using outlook. It was so bad that I often went onto the Gmail website to delete mails with large attachments. Now, I am downloading e-mails at 200KB/s!

Outlook 2007 Slow While Downloading POP3 Email

Another problem that is caused by new Vista (Win7) feature – TCP Windows Scaling. The symptom for Outlook 2007 slow problem is that when you download email messages from a POP3 mail server, the Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 may take a very long time to download the e-mail message. For example, for a relatively small 1-megabyte (MB) in size email message, the download process may take one hour.

Microsoft KB935400 blames the cause of the Outlook 2007 slowness to network hardware device, such as a router, that does not support TCP Window Scaling. However, the problem does not exist in Windows XP, thus the problem is probably more due to poor implementation of TCP Windows Scaling feature, or at least due to this feature that does not provide backward compatibility with older network equipments.

To solve the problem, simply disable the Vista AutoTuning function which is the most common suggestion and fix for various network problems in Vista.

Here’s the step to disable TCP Window Scaling Auto Turning feature:

1. Click Start button, click All Programs, and then click Accessories.
2. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
4. Try to download the emails with Outlook 2007 again. The slow downloading problem should have resolved. Microsoft also suggest users to isolate the hardware that does not support TCP Window Scaling, replace the hardware and re-enable the autoTuningLevel parameter.

I've actually hit my peak speeds in over 2 months - extremly chuffed on my side ;)

877kbps and 106kbps

When will Vodacom do something?

Hi,

Im from Burgersfort, Limpopo. Been using Vodacom 3G broadband service for 3yrs now. In this 3yrs I complained, beg and fight. Yet nothing has been done about the poor quality of service we receive! Using the Mahubahuba tower and sometimes my utility card will tell me its an MTN tower which of course is total nonsense according to Vodacom! Ive been connected with MTN a couple of times yet Vodacom insist its pure nonsense... Whatever! Come look on my pc I will show you another truth!
So I phoned vodacom about a week ago. Not only is the internet down even cell phones have no reception. Vodacom replied with "no-one phoned and complained" How does one phone with no network coverage in a radius of 30km?????
Back to my current problem...
Data transfer rate:
Received = 80 bps
Sent = 70 bps

I know slugs moving faster than that!!!!

How about we address the problem or must I, as a contract customer, complain for another 3years?

Btw vodacom promised via sms to have a look at it guess what? Yes you right its a promise full stop!!!!

Y

pm me your details. I might know some one who could assist.

VODACOM IS A JOKE, look at this pathetic speeds that I am payin R 185 for 500meg. Cell C here I come. Even though they didn't "officially" launch in Joburg they are getting better speeds than vodacom.

3) Device: Linkseys router with card

Is that a newer USB stick datacard? Or one of those old red cards you stick in the top of those old Linksys silver routers?

I know Linksys came out with a newer router, which supported USB cards. But then the B970 router came out and everyone upgraded to that instead.

Yep it's the old one you stick in the silver router.

It can only do 1.8m/s. So I thought I'll try my e220, it was even slower. Geez man, what is up with the signal. Then I won't even mention numerous calls that fail etc...etc...etc...

Coverage issues just outside Pretoria

Dear Vodacom,

I have logged this issue with the Vodacom Help Desk under reference number S2-6V23J-JK5YL.

The problem exists in the Welbekend area where a customer is running a Transport company. They require internet access and cannot use a fixed line as Telkom is not able to provide such a line at this time. However, they have a Vodacom Mast on their premises that provides 3G coverage to the area and is about 20 meters from their office, but there is a very weak signal on the premises where the mast is installed (it almost appears that the office is to close to the mast).

The customer is willing to purchase and install one of the Poynting Antennas in order to increase the signal in the offices, but running some basic tests using a high gain antenna did not reveal any positive results. More tests where done using the Huawei K3715 Modem, an HP internal Laptop Modem and a Nokia E66 handset - none has a decent signal?

I am wondering if Vodacom technicians are able to assist in resolving this issue? The customer is desperate for internet access, has a Vodacom 3G enabled mast on their premises and yet have a very bad and unstable signal. Queries to the helpdesk have not provided any positive feedback to date - hence this post and invitation to Vodacom to assist.

A complete view of the area is available on google street view, where the location and mast can clearly be seen:

That tower most likely only supports 2G. I've driven down Garsfontein and when I pass Bashewa I get a 3G signal, and when I get to the R25 (Pretoria Road) I only get a 2G signal. Then driving down the R25 towards Bapsfontein, I only get my 3G signal back when I get to Bapsfontein (R50/Delmas Road).

So most likely they still need to upgrade that Welbekend tower to support 3G.

If you have a 3G yagi, you could try pointing it towards Bashewa, in a north westerly direction.
