Don't you just love this on Vodacom website:
1. What disruption can I expect the network upgrade to have on my service?
Vodacom is striving to ensure that the impact to you is minimal and we anticipate only 1 – 2 hour service degradation. Although you may experience dropped calls or limited access via 3G, we recommend that you switch your handset to dual mode to ensure that you get the strongest signal possible in the area.

1-2 hours yeah right.... funny thing is the one system that they never manage to break is their billing.

According to 082155 the problems are due to a Telkom cable break that occurred on Sunday - took 12 minutes on hold to find that out last night. Not quite sure whether to believe it ... more than 2 days to fix a cable?

Very possible if Telkom is involved. They suck donkey balls. :(

This is insane!
I know this is not the thread for DSL but yesterday was a nightmare all over JHB. Now this morning I had clients in various places around JHB that could not get to Hetzner mail servers over VC 3G!
Then all of the sudden it was working again...
Something is going on and everyone seems to be keeping quiet about it!!!

Now that would be jusssssst maddening wouldnt it:twisted::p

Luckily my adsl is up 'n running, just in time. The reception for the whole of September was terrible. It disconnected constantly. ADSL have not blinked and is faster than the revered HSDPA VC. ANd I have a 384 line.

still had issues yesterday again, VC website says upgrade supposed to finish 27th anyone else?

frustrated

I currently live in hatfield, pretoria, and have had no problems with the vodacom 3g until about a month ago. My pings to europe started becomming extremely eratic and ranging from 700 to over 10k... This seems to happen at random times during the day (lasting for hours) and stops around 10pm after which my pings are 300ish again and stable. This is very frustrating as I am currently playing online games on european servers. But it does not stop there...

Local ping are around 300-600, which is highly unacceptable as they were around 60 earlier this year.
an example on pingtest.net for a ping to the pretoria/jhb server: http://www.pingtest.net/result/25377535.png. This makes even local gaming very frustrating...

Ive tested this on a couple of different pc's in the area, all of which have the same problem at the same times.

I'm very tired of this...

What modem are you using?

I'm not sure why, but I've noticed higher pings on modems that only support 384kbps uploads. On the newer modems that support HSUPA, the pings are lot lower.

Could also be congestion on the tower you're connecting to? Where in Hatfield are you? Do you know which tower you're connecting to? Have you logged a call with Vodacom? Ref number?

Complaining on here does not instantly resolve your issues.

Ir's simple it is called over subscription, nothing else.
Yes the fact that the HSUPA modems can do higher speeds on the upload means you will get a better experiance over all but remember you generaly download more than you upload.

VC need more bandwidth on the upstream to ensure that they can provide a fair service during the day when there are more people using the network.
As you have seen the it all settles down again at night when there are not as many people on the network

The good thing about having a smart phone is speedtest on the go!

I have conducted speedtest at my home around non-peak times and never has the speed hit past 3mb/s. About 5km away in Gateway (New town) I get over 3.6mb/s during peak times! 50 - 99 ping also. Same device/same amount of signal around 73 dBm. I have been using Vodacom again thou the speeds are not that grand at home. How can a tower 5kms away do that?

I was meaning to post this a while back

Device supports HSDPA 7.2 / HSUPA
W-CDMA 900 / 2100

Connection problems in Gauteng

Been having a dismal morning here in Fourways, Johannesburg. The guy I spoke to on 155 says there's a problem in South Gauteng.

Anyone else having problems or feedback?

Anybody else having problems (or are they so severe you can't get on to read this?)?

This is driving me nuts - I've called 155 a few times and all I hear is that they "are aware of the problem". They suggested I try to set my modem to GPRS but then it can't even detect a network.

And now the CellC thread says they only get to Johannesburg at the end of October. Aaauuurgghhh!!

I'm close to Fourways, in Lonehill and connecting to the Lonehill tower on Main Road. Had no issues last night and this morning.

I thought Vodacom were supposed to have 21.1mbps as 'tested in February the 2nd'?? My internet is also inconsistent in Somerset West. Will this improve? I want to play xbox live by November 10!!
