I did some testing on a different computer (Dell Latitude X1), running a different operating system (Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot) and using a different modem (Vodafone K4605). The only things that were the same were the SIM card and the tower, both of which belong to Vodacom.*

After a steady 4-5Mbps the speed suddenly dropped to zero. It had taken half an hour for the graph to get from just before the '9' to just after the '0' in the text '4.90' above, when I cancelled the test.

I then tried to download an ISO using wget, just to make sure my dubious browser history didn't come back to haunt me.
After downloading 17MB, the speed suddenly dropped and the ETA started climbing.
Code:

*I have read that SIM cards remain the property of the network operator.

No BIS or Internet all day today in Durban

I have a BB Bold - no BIS. I also have a HTC Sensation - no Internet connectivity. What is going on?

Vodacom has been having trouble for the past few months... Hope they upgrade their network soon.

No 3G signal in Technopark Stellenbosch. Only GSM.
To be specific, 3G signal is shown, after rebooting phone 3G signal is gone. Confirmed with 2 colleagues on Vodacom.

Last night and this morning I was unable to browse the internet for more than a few minutes. Just got connection timeouts.

I see the connection in Rosebank is still non-existant. I thought Ill give it a try after a 2 months break (my 8ta bundle expired) but the VC data is still screwed, so back to 8ta.

This is from this morning:

Seriously Vodacom?

EDIT: I wasn't able to do a second test before I had to leave for work. I just kept timing out :-(

More tests, results here.

Of the 39 tests, 7 had pings of over 1000ms, for example the following to the Vodacom speedtest server in Johannesburg:

This is still happening:

3 of the tests started out at full speed then approximately three quarters of the way through, throughput dropped to almost zero and the tests took several minutes to complete, for example the following to the Neology speedtest server in Midrand:

This seems to have been resolved since December 14.

Is the Vodacom network down?

Or is it just my iPhone? Rebooted 4 times now and still getting NO SERVICE in the network bar.

Durban area. Was working about 30 minutes ago.

held for 14 minutes phoning 155 and then I called it quits. BIS for wife and I are down.

Must be in the area you in.

In PE. Got through to them last night. Apparently problem in our region, query logged "escalated to technician". Irrespective working this morning. After 1 1/2 day of not working! Eish... Ya, I DO hope that the biggest(?) cellular provider in sa sort the problems out.
