International FTP is working for me on unrestricted.

Thanks Morhkans, I did resolve this later that evening, shut down all pc's, rebooted hubs, routers and then fired the whole lot up again and the problem was eventually gone. Reconnects were not resolving it but the total shutdown did :)

Slow speeds in Upington

Hi,

I'm in Upington for two weeks and seeing that there is no Iburst covarage here I have to use my cell phone. I bought a standard 2,3gig data bundle but my speeds are very slow. I usually download at about 200b/s but now I only get about 10b/s and my browsing is also very slow. Feels like I'm back on dail-up.
There's two Vodacom towers not two far from where I'm staying so the covarage should be good. When I use a 3G modem I get decent speeds but not with my phone.

I got the Samsung F480 with 7,2HSDPA.

Anyway I can increase the speed? Thx.

So you getting decent speeds when you use a 3G in Upington? Or when you are somewhere else? Why not then continue using your 3G modem? If your modem is giving you decents speeds but your phone not in the same location, then there is somehting not lekker on the phone. Stupid question, is the phone set to 3G mode?

I was under the impression that if you browsed on the phone it was in 3g but when you use the phone as a modem for PC browsing it switches automatically to hsdpa? Or do I have that all wrong?

If your handset or modem is HSDPA capable, then yes, it will make the switch. I think it is also controlled by the BTS. If you are doing intensive downloading, the tower will switch you over the HSDPA...but when your connection is idle, it will switch you back to normal 3G.

But that is not important here I think. He needs to check that his settings on his phone is correct. If he has it in GSM only mode, then he will get much slower speeds as compared with his modem.

In the same location. Thing is it's not my Modem and if I put my sim card in the modem I won't be able to receive any phone calls. I was actually getting good speeds on Monday when I was using the phone but it didn't last very long and ever since then the speed just went slower and slower.
Hmm not sure where to check those settings. But ya like I said I did get good speeds on Monday. And when I'm in Alberton I always get decent speeds so I think the setting on the phone should be correct.

Just saw now that even with the modem I get constant disconnections and keeps saying searching for signal. So I guess the problem is with Vodacom maybe? Just weird cause I'm very close to the Towers.

Just changed the setting to UMTS now and seems to be much faster now. Hopefully will stay like that ;) Thx!

1) Location: Randpark Ridge
2) Time of issue: 20:29 (weeks earlier probably)
3) Device: Hauwei E220
4) Contract Type : add on data to contract phone
5) Existing reference numbers from 155: Pointless
6) speed.vodacom.co.za results (if possible): 150kpbs down and 90 up

Anyone else experiencing extremely low throughput in the Western suburbs of Johannesburg?

Since lunchtime, yesterday, my speeds have been lower than that of a dial-up modem, yet a VC speed test yields speeds of 4.5Mbps/1.6Mbps.

I am unable to access the speedtest.net website.

VD, I have PMed you.

Still the same barring speed test figures which are 1400 ping and 216mbps/136mbps (can't remember when Vodacom worked) ...

Day 3 ... and still no joy from Vodacom, apart from an SMS to say the the problem has been handed over to their networks department.

This is not good for business, VC ... not for yours and not for mine!

Well, looks like I am back in business. The problem was sorted out this morning. Thanks VC and VD! :)

I am really impresssed today ;) Fastest I've been in weeks!

461kbps down and 281kbps up

The last few weeks have all been 256kbps or below - so probably even quicker than the slowest ADSL right now : very chuffed!

Out of interest - what is this thread even here for?

I can see questions 'have you mailed? have you phoned? Do you have a reference number?

So is this purely to brag and vent at how slow/fast we are?

If so, may as well close it as it serves no real purpose

The purpose of this thread is to centralise complaints about services levels. The idea is that the rep or any other Vodacom employees that monitor the forum can check this thread to see if people are experiencing problems. Generally the rep will request people PM his their details as well so he can investigate or follow-up if there is an existing ref from 155.
